He used to come to a place I worked at back in the day. Man, he would just blow us away...

Loves me some Buch! The opening of Messiah on ACL reminds me somewhat of Eric Johnson's opening to Cliffs of Dover on ACL

This is a nice one, too

If you don't already have it, I'll recommend you to buy the DVD "Live From Austin". It contains among others this version of "The Messiah..." plus a great version of "Hey Joe".

    If you hadn't posted it Tele295, I would've ... (Only I can't embed )

Just like Danny Gatton, Roy could play any style or genre, even if he didn't possess Danny's dexterity. I think Roy's rendition is unsurpassed, though.

Alas, there are those who don't "get" Roy, even on the best of Tele forums  ...

I'm not sure there was ever a better pure Tele player. Others might be more technically advanced, but Buchanan just played with so much soul and imagination. He was one of a kind.

The first time I saw Roy Buchanan play I went home, put my guitar in the closet and closed the door. I KNEW I couldn't really play that thing, couldn't even guess how he made those sounds come out of a Tele... ( I was only about 17) . Didn't touch a guitar for about six months, then got inspired to start learning again. Of course now I know about pinch harmonics and volume swells. It was truely a humbling experience for me. It seems a shame that he's not more widely known, the only people I know that even know who he was are guitar players.

That's the nature of things though, isn't it? How many non-musicians know all the great jazz musicians of the world, or James Burton? Heck, Bill Clinton didn't even know who James Burton was on Elvis Costello's 'Spectacles'. Great instrumentalists get the short end of the stick as far as fame and glory.

Okay by me. Otherwise, Gibson might come out with a Roy Buchanan Telekaster package. Then again, Fender might come out with a Vibrolux with knobs on the back...

It was the music of Roy Buchanan that got me interested in Telecasters to begin with.

There's a tab book out there of some Roy greats, but it's pretty tough to be able to play anything close to his ability even with the transcriptions. I've learned some cool tricks though, like playing a harmonic chord by running your fingers an octave over where you're playing, it's a pretty sound.
