i need to check a few other discs against this, but the volume is on the low side and while the tv says that i'm turning it up, it's not getting louder.

Obviously there's something amiss in the audio circuitry.

Check the volume controls on the DVD player.

i tried the volume buttons on the dvd/blue ray remote.

the bride of reanimator dvd was very quiet, but i think the simpsons dvd i had on the other day was at a more reasonable volume. some other dvd i had on last week was also super quiet, but i don't remember that kind of volume disparity being normal before.

CRT-type TVs get pretty hot in operation and the small electolytic caps on the board can't take too much of that abuse over the many years of use.

If you pop it open you'll probably find one (or more) bulging or leaking caps. Looks like this:

See how the tops of those caps are bulging a little and dome shaped? The four in the foreground are split and leaking. These little caps are stamped across the top, just like a little beer can, designed to fracture along the stamp lines. They have a life span. Just like a can of beer

You can easily spot a bad cap even if it's not leaking because (1) the top is domed, and/or (2) it's sitting crooked--not perfectly vertical--on the board. This is because sometimes caps bulge out the bottom and they sit cattywompus on the board.

If you do pop open the TV for a look-see, remember that there can be lethal voltages stored in the circuit even when it's not plugged into the AC power supply. Be Careful.

if i can't get it sorted i'll just run the audio from my blu ray player/vcr/roku to something else.

i've never seen a flat screen tv that i thought looked good, and they're too small to have decent speakers in them. people buy them because they take up less space and they're light.

i tried a simpsons dvd and it was noticeably louder but still a little quieter than i'm used to. my kwaidon blu ray was a little bit quiet but the sound may be mixed at a lower volume and it's subtitled which distracts from that a little.
