Any players you like that play off time sometimes or aren't tight?

I've been told that I play just a little off time, but that it sounds good. It makes me a bit self concious, because I never thought of myself as being a loose player. I play heavy punk/hard rock/pop rock type music. I've been playing over 15 years and I really want to improve my timing. I'm mostly self taught, although I did play piano and I know a little basic music theory. My favorite guitarists are jimmy page, hendrix, keef, ron wood, pete townesend, james williamson and tommi iomi. The thing I've allways heard about rock music, is that it isnt meant to be perfect, and I have allways believed that. But along time ago my guitarist buddy did tell me, that timing was a weakness of mine. I have improved alot since then, but now I feel like i should practice on a metronome all the time lol.

I've heard people say jimmy page had horrible timing or was a sloppy player, but I have never really noticed. is that true? Are there any other musicians who aren't the most technical that you still enjoy?

John Lee Hooker. Notoriously difficult to accompany because he'd extend verses or measures, or cut them off, or change tempo, without warning.

Keith Richards comes immediately to mind.

Joe Perry is another one who can push or pull the groove, playing from one side of the pocket all the way over to the other side and back again.

First one that entered my mind was Keith Richards. In my mind, he’s at his best when he’s at his raunchiest. Several others have already been mentioned. To that list, I would like to add Bob Dylan and Johnny Ramone.

Willie Nelson did not become "WILLIE" until he started singing just in front of and just after the beat. Screwing up the timing made him a STAR!

Willie of course, but I love how he rushes up the lyrics to get back on beat.

He was going nowhere as a short haired guy sporting a crewcut who wore George Jones look a like suits, and bit his words off like a pit bull eatin' sausage. Then he let his hair grow dressed like a hippie who stole his clothes from and Indian reservation, started singing just in front of or behind the beat, and suddenly he was WILLIE!

The drummer gets paid to keep the beat ... Not the guitarist ...
