I bought an Eastwood MRG Octave Mandolin last year. It's electric and sounds like a strangely tuned Rick 12. I'm not used to EADG tuning, but I'm learning what I can do with it. They were $649 last year, $699 now.

d barham, re the photo you posted, is the Gibson EM-150 mandolin an instrument you can recommend? I'm an experienced mando player, always been interested in this model, but never tried one. Thanks for any commentary.

That EM150 crossed my path at just the right time. A good friend of mine had just traded for it and I had a little cash in my pocket.

I play and gig with a mandolin. The one to the left is my Godin Electric mandolin. The 2nd one is my Lyon Healy Tear Drop that I inherited from my grandpa. I love playing the mandolin, especially in folk rock bands.

I guess it depends what you want to use it for. It’s well built. No complaints about the P90.

It sounds really muted when played acoustically. I probably wouldn’t play it out unplugged.

Mine is a ‘59. I got it for a good price, I wasn’t really looking for one.

Nice. I also play an active Carvalho octave mandolin which I tune to GDAD and play it like a short scale bouzouki. For the large-handed, an octave mandolin is the way to go.
I love this thing. I took a day off work and travelled to Galway from Dublin tby train o pick it up. Got to Galway and had a great time in Moloneys instruments playing it and left it with them for a couple of hours to set it up while I fecked around town, had a few pints and an amazing chowder. I've played a ton of sessions with it, it seriously rocks.
I’m after one of these myself. I hadn’t thought about tuning it like a bouzouki but now I’m even more curious. McNeela has one on sale right now but I don’t know how his branded ones compare with the Carvalho. I just poked my nose into Moloney’s website and that cedar one caught my eye. Next trip home I might get the train to Galway. If I can’t swing that soon I may see if they’ll ship one.

I tried to get to a shop in Donegal last summer but it was shut while I was in town. But the chowder was dead on.

The great mando players have all left Bakersfield. I'm ok with chords and chop. I can play well in C,D, and G on fiddle tunes melodies.
