How do you think we should carry on; keep expanding this thread, or start a fresh one every month? I would favour the latter.

When George Harrison died, my boss asked me to quote one of his songs in our newsletter. I spent half an hour sifting through his lyrics and couldn't find anything that stood alone as a meaningful thought.

His songs are good because of the way the words and music fit together, not because of how either sounds standing alone. E.g:

"I look at the floor and see it needs sweeping, while my guitar gently weeps."

"I dig love. . . . I love dig. . . ."

And speaking of summer songs: "Here comes the sun, and I say, "It's alright."

The verse that sticks with me from that song is:

"With every mistake, we must surely be learning, still my guitar gently weeps."

Yeah, that 'sweeping' line is a filler. But still, because of its essence and historical significance and just plain beauty, it's one of the greatest songs of all time, IMHO.

The apparent simplicity of Here Comes the Sun makes it so brilliant.

All things must pass, you know?

Exactly!

I've written poems, but when I try to put them to music, they suck.

For the songs I've written, I always write the the words and music simultaneously; or start with a chorus and add a few words and go simultaneously from there.

It seems like some of you have the tune in your head already with these lyrics. Wouldn't it be good to post a recording of the song – no matter how rough – with the lyrics?

Or are these strictly lyrics without music?

Yeah, I don't know how. And I've got nothing to brag about, so it seems like more trouble than it's worth. And I haven't recorded for a few years, anyhow. Just been writing, jamming, and gigging.
