So, I previously posted this photo, incorrectly as it happens, in another thread about Gretsch ....

However, I personally think it's a great image (possibly early-mid 60s) of The Stones on stage somewhere or other.

But .... what on earth is the big circular lump of metal(?) in the foreground?

I cannot believe it's anything to do with the stage sound but does appear to have a grille on it.
Only thought that passes my mind, for those who can remember them, is that it's a giant fire-alarm bell - those sort that had a rotating 'clanger' inside them?
    Prototype fuzz-face on it's edge?
Place where the stage-prompt used to sit for stage-plays ....

So, any ideas anyone .... Cheers

    Spot light? Camera flash head?

It may be something small near the camera; that shot has a long depth of field (pretty much everything is in focus).

    Guessing.
Possible 1940's big band style music stand? May have a speaker in it to amplify vocals?

Theatrical version of one of these, usually used for the entrance of Mephistopheles and other satanic majesties.

I'm wondering if it was a product promo of some kind, and not necessarily part of their gear... although one would think a MFG sign would be attached to it or something... strange indeed and as to what it might be, you got me!

The lighting and resolution on the mystery object doesn't really look the same as the Stones on stage. I wonder if this is a photograph of a photograph, and there was an object laying on the print?

MY guess: It's a floor monitor of some kind, or maybe a footlight, in the foreground of the picture, making it look bigger than it is.

No brainer. Everyone who uses one of these knows what it is.

My first thought was that it was some kind of large cooling fan, such as was in a mildly controversial thread on the TDPRI.

But I think Peegoo is right about it being an item close the the camera. Perhaps the camera had auto-focus, and the object took the focus away from the Stones and onto it. It's in better focus than the band.

not back then. autofocus was invented in the late 70's and didn't become commonplace until the mid 90s.

I'm thinking it could be the back of a horn driver style pa speaker being used as a vocal monitor.

horn drivers that reproduced the vocal range of frequencies were often used in concert pa systems to give more clarity vocals, or used as tweeters to add clarity to the high end.

Custom drivers were often loaded into generic horns. You can see a back plate and screw holes.

Could be, but I kinda think monitors in 1964-65 are about as likely as autofocus... :)

Whatever it is, Wyman wants to keep his guitar away from it!
