I'm going to call my amp guy but wondered if y'all have any suspicions as to what's causing a weird noise coming out of my Fender MusicMaster bass amp (6V6 version with Red Fang alnico 12" speaker).

When I play the low E, especially an open E or G, third fret, there is a weird thumping sound that will sound two or three times after I hit the note. I thought maybe a loose speaker or loose baffle but I don't think that's it after checking. Also made sure the tubes were snug in their sockets, but it sounds different from tube rattle. My biggest suspicion is that the speaker is blown, but it otherwise sounds OK and has good output. Like I say, I'll be bringing it into my amp dude for trouble shooting, anyway, but it's a new one for me.

Try turning the amp 90 degrees to the right and to the left to see if anything changes. Might help if it's a mechanical issue.

Squirrels. No, seriously, probably something else loose in there. Tighten all the screws.

Has the amp been recapped? Sorry...but one has to ask with an amp of this age.

I'm going to say it is one of two things not already mentioned as they are good places to look:

    1) bad solder joint that has cracked over the years and on the low notes creating what I call the cable guy effect

    2) Mathew Mconaughey is in another dimension trying desperately to get your attention.

    Also...

Rule out the bass itself; try another instrument and see if you can replicate the noise.

I use it for guitar, not bass, and yes this amp has been fully serviced, although last service was probably about 10 y ago. The "cable guy" effect may be a good candidate if turning the amp on its side or using a diff speaker doesn't make it go away.

If it happens more with open E and G on the lose E string, that seems to be microphonic.

I would bet on power valve.

    Good luck getting it sorted!

Cool, I have some old power tubes laying around. I will try all these things before crawling to my amp guy.
