Hi, I'm doing a super simple project matching a headstock on a cheap Ibanez with a gloss black finish. I thought a nicely polished & leveled lacquer finish wouldn't match the cheapy paint job.

So I just want to do a nice prep of the wood and then see how good I can get with an enamel finish in gloss black. What I've seen of enamel finishes I think will match closely with the finish on the body and it sounds like fun to try something different.

Any favorite enamel cans to recommend? I'd like one that does a good job of self leveling. Do I need a primer on maple? I'm guessing I won't. And of course I'll do a test on scrap first :)

    yes you need a primer.

I would use a laquer paint over enamel as well. Any reason you want to use enamel?
