What a band! Stripped-down simplicity, great tunes.
Everyone in the band was great - none of them were replaceable.
    Andy Fraser - Totally unique.
I had the privilege of seeing them '73/74(?) - w/ Edgar Winter, Dr. Hook.
They did not disappoint - 6 Marshall stacks, they played everything, & then some.

    Bad Company didn't come close.

They have a lot of great clips on Youtube.

I was a huge Free fan. Have most of the records (on vinyl) except maybe the first one. They did make a virtue of simplicity. Clapton was supposedly a big fan of Paul Kossoff. Kossoff played a Les Paul despite being a small guy and had that great tone and left hand vibrato.

I can say that Paul Kossoff is in my top 3 favorite guitar players of all time list.

There isn't a more powerful sound source in the whole world than his vibrato.

Fire and water. 1970, a great tune, a great album, played over and over with Deep Purple's "In Rock" at my first week long party with the girlfiend that robbed me of my innocence. Try as I might, I can't find a bad memory in the bunch......

Kossoff is one of a few guys who can be identified by playing 1 note.

Always loved Free. I got the dvd 'Free Forever' a couple of years ago and, although it's made up of several short sections from old tv programmes they did in 69/70 and a short section of film from their Isle of Wight festival gig and the same songs are repeated several times, I love seeing them play. They really were one of the best of the '**** rock' bands of the 70's.

I've also got a Bad Co dvd and Paul Rodgers sings on another dvd I've got somewhere, I feel that he's now become a bit of a caricature of his former self and has lost the credibility he talks about Free having back in their prime.

He's still a great singer, just plays a bit too much on the laddish attitude that he used to have.

But Kossoff was a remarkable player. If only he'd survived the drugs........
