Can't think of a forum where the people are smarter and know more than this one, so here goes.

I have a USB device from years ago, with a driver for Windows 7. I now only have Windows 10 machines and can't get the driver to install on them. I did some googling and found a possible solution that doesn't work (right-click on it, select "troubleshoot compatibility", select "it worked on an earlier version of Windows"... etc.).

Anyone know a workaround for this?

This is the device in question: https://www.ueitest.com/ECommerce/product/thl2/thl2

In general driver support is the least likely to be backward compatible. Will vary from case to case and I know of no generic approach that will reliably work. Best thing is to go to the device mfr website and hope they have an updated driver. But don't hold your breath.

What happens, exactly? It fails silently? You get an error message? It says it was successful but doesn't recognize the device?

2012 looks like last time it was updated.

Can you see it as a USB drive to open. The logging data may be extractable manually into Excel or something if you can see files.

Have you installed the software first?

    Software Installation
The THL2 comes with software that must be installed before the device can be used. Insert software CD into computer and follow the install instructions. After installation, place unit in the PC USB port to begin download data.

Is there a right click option to install with Admin rights in Win10? I'm still on Win7.
    the data sheet says:

    HL2 is compatible with computers using windows™ 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 10.

    so there must be way.

The software installed just fine. However, when I try to run the installer for the driver, there a big red warning dialog box from InstallShield Wizard that says installation has been blocked for my protection, please contact administrator (or course I am the administrator). When I first put the device in the USB slot the computer took a moment to think about it and then said "your new hardware has been installed" but the software says it can't contact the device.

You can't configure the logger to start recording data without the software being able to contact it.

Nope, You need explicit Admin rights.
any old installer could run it's course when you're the everyday Admin. it's blocked for a reason.
As I'm not on Win10, I don't know how. I'll be waiting Win11 to get back on track.

Try right clicking on the installer and select Run as Admin

    Or try this....

    ——————

Windows 10 enforces driver signatures by default. This can be disabled to install drivers that are not digitally signed. Use the following steps to disable driver signature enforcement.

    1. Click the Start menu and select Settings.
    2. Click Update and Security.
    3. Click on Recovery.
    4. Click Restart now under Advanced Startup.
    5. Click Troubleshoot.
    6. Click Advanced options.
    7. Click Startup Settings.
    8. Click on Restart.
    9. On the Startup Settings screen press 7 or F7 to disable driver signature enforcement.
Your computer will restart and you will be able to install non-digitally signed drivers. If you restart your computer again the driver signature enforcement will be re-enabled.

Thank you, tried, did not change anything but it's good to know about that. Here is the dialog that pops up. I'll call the manufacturer Monday and hopefully they have a current driver for this, since they still sell them.

I had the same problem awhile ago and I did some research and the solution was to turn off Windows built in defender. It thought it was malware but was a driver too. Worked for me.

    This.

For driver installs, even compatibility mode won't help.

Looks like it might still be in the ZIP file - try dragging the installer to your desktop and run it from there, normally and then as Admin if needed.

Side note: Windows key + Shift + S lets you take a screenshot.
