Another music venue gone in Dublin. The Star Bar was a great little spot, catering predominantly to original acts and was a valuable venue for showcasing new talent. It's been bought out by a corporate group whose existing venues are soulless kips full of self-indulgent wankers drinking overpriced cocktails.
I had two gigs lined up there in July, Sunday afternoon gigs too, which I would have been able to bring the kids along to. Ah well.
RIP

Small business is a thing of the past. The big guys have gotten so big regulars folks just can't compete. The last merger will end with one stock held corp owning everything and all of it's board and officers being AI generated. Welcome to the machine.

The punk rock answer to this problem is obviously to just open an alternative venue somewhere that has authentic acts. Any place with four walls and electrical outlets, roof optional. Legality also discretionary.

I've got to say, even out here at the end of the logistics chain it's starting to feel that way. It's been a few years since I've been to a pub where you find the owner behind the bar.

It has been bad for a couple of years, but definitely worsened after the pandemic.
Less and less small clubs.
That was one of the reasons why we started hosting a large garden party with our band and also organize a venue for up to 3 bands around April.
Not earning money, of course, but at least two more gigs.....

It's amazing what you can achieve once you cut profit out of the equation.

Don't get me wrong, I feel kind of bad when accepting a gig without proper fee, because entertainment should be paid properly. I mean, people happily spend money for useless s..t, but avoid small clubs, because "I'm not paying 10 Euro for some minor band!"

But still, I'm into music as a hobby (it took me about a year back around 1994 - 1995 to realize that I'm neither good nor lucky enough to make it as a professional musician). I want to play. so: "If the mountain will not go to Mahomet, let Mahomet go to the mountain."
We've been doing this since 2021, people are free to get in and we call it a private party and sent out invitations to friends and family qith the notion to invite others as well. Being a private event, we avoid the obligatory permissions by the regularly authorities. Guests pay for the drinks (way less than in any pub around) and are free to leave tips. I usually end up with enough money to invite my significant other for cinema and a decent dinner.

I dislike when that happens , in this town ( Kamloops) and we are a small town, we have local coffee houses that host a talent night and rotate through the other small towns in the area , a great place to have entertainment fresh coffee and baked goods all for under 10.00 per person on average , entrance is 2.00 unless you are a performer that night then its free.
Sorry to hear they closed

The guy who owned The Star Bar cashed out - he didn't care.

And yet there's still plenty of live music, especially around urban areas.

The Birmingham Jazz and Blues Festival is later this month. Venues all over Birmingham and beyond, most of them free.
