I've been hearing this at my gym for months, but just realized how widespread it is.

The TV in the lobby area is tuned to some kind of obscure MTV style music video station with a bunch of people I've never heard of.

I noticed today that 5 songs in a row consisted of one line repeated over and over.

    That's all, just one line.

The one I remember went like,

    Something something LOCO.......OOOH!

    Music

    Music

    Music

    Music

    Something something LOCO.......OOOH!

    Music

    Music

    Music

    Music

    Something something LOCO.......OOOH!

Rinse, lather and repeat for 2.5 minutes!

The other four were pretty much the same thing.

One line, music, same line, music, same line again, music.

Is this some kind of new style? Or just some weird TV music station?

Try running it through Shazam and you'll get the track names and that will lead you to the style.

My guess is that gyms play the music that suits the environment. Fast, repetitive, and relentless. Don't need to pay attention. Maybe tending toward the trancelike states if played loud and repeatedly.

I used to go to a gym that disallowed personal music players (pre-smartphone era) and they had just two CDs. One was a generic pop collection and the other was a "rock classics" collection. First they played one, then they played the other. Then the first one again. As much as I loved Parisienne Walkways and Spirit In The Sky, I could quite happily never listen to them again.

Thank goodness other music genres don't have repeated cliches. "Woke up this morning ..." :)

Maybe the gym is using Pandora and typed in,"repeated lyrics".

Gyms match music to their vibe. Would you rather go the 'Hallelujah it's raining men" gym?

EDIT: not that there's anything wrong with that.

Yes, I think I would prefer that. At least it has humor value.

Yep, tons of modern music sounds like loops stitched together. Something that tends to go along with that is lack of skillful embellishments and lack of variation in arrangement. Computer recording has exerted it's influence here.

Another very common thing in modern music is singing with a baby talk articulation. Yuck. Find some personal style, people.

Sounds like devolution to me (babys singing over loops).

I guess a good gym song would involve Olivia Newton John wanting to get physical.

Maybe some here will think this is in bad taste, but I think that pointing out real examples can be constructive.

I definitely took my knocks when criticizing this for sounding like baby talk over a loop.
It sure was popular, but I don't care about popular.

More of what sounds like to me baby talk over loops.

For comparison to the above two, a similar style song from the 90's.

And more of the baby talk over loops of another style

I could keep pointing out examples, but I think you get the point.

You are witnessing the "democratization of music." All the good, all the bad.

What, nobody listens to Eye of the Tiger at the gym anymore? Maniac? :)

Way back in my day I listened to Rollins Band while I pumped iron...

It’s all personal, most people bring their headphones. Nowadays when I run, I don’t listen to anything but the birds and coyotes...
