Another Joyo fan here. Sold the American when I got my Quilter Aviator Cub US. Never had the AC Tone- ran a Tech 21 Liverpool for a few years, same thing. Currently I’m digging the Joyo Ironman series. The Orange Juicer is great for that 70s Brit sound.

There seems to be a lot of love for these pedals so i though I would try one. Now I get it!!!! I plugged it into the return on a Rumble 60 and into a small power amp that I made. LOL! the best pedal I own is also the least expensive. I will try recording with it soon and maybe down the road I will get the AC Tone...I'm a believer. I cannot say it sounds like a 57 Deluxe Fender amp (cause I don't have one) but it sounds very good.
Yes, the price is good but, open one up and, then you’ll know why the price is cheap. I am not advocating to always buy Boss because I have owned and played Behringer and, they are Great for a lot less money.

Funny you should mention the American Sound. I got one a week ago and have felt a tad embarrassed about admitting how much I like it. In fact, I took it off my pedal board and put it by itself in front of a Quilter head dialed-in for clean tone and a bit of reverb. Very satisfying. There's some magic in it. Many rewarding sound combinations.

One thing that can be said of "good for cheap": you can buy two for less than one of the high-price pedals, having one in reserve just in case. Or . . . . for stacking.

I don't split hairs ( anymore) about things like
" Do the Joyo pedals sound as good as the original Tech21 Character pedals?"...

(side note: which when the Character pedals came out in the guitar magazines, I went nuts on, reading about them. But I did not have the $99 they cost. ( still don't- I buy all cheap)
Reality check today- is Tech21 doesn't make these anymore- JOYO does- so let's move on!)

...or, "Do these pedals ( either Joyo or Tech21) really sound like the amps they are emulating?"
It seems like the answers are, the Joyo are in the ballpark of the originals, and either brand gets you in the ballpark of the respective amps.
So this is good!

The Joyos are different from each other, yes, but their strength IMO, is how 'friendly' they all are because of the gradual taper ( in terms of sound) of all the knobs- the powerful range that is there- its subtle, but strong.

You can really dial-in what's in your head with these- literally get that sound out of your PA or a clean guitar amp

I personally favor using my pedals ( American & AC-TONE) to get respectively clean Fender and Vox sounds, just because 1) I'm gonna get my OD tones out of a pedal anyway, and 2) the Voice and Gain knobs get noisy as you turn them UP, so I don't go past NOON on either ( closer to 10/11 clock)

Nope, each one is a solid pedal and they each stand alone. No overlap from what I've heard from the 4 I have: American, AC Tone, British, and American.

Indeed. This thread has been referred to many times when the subject of the Joyo AS comes up (and other emulators even..):

They (Tech21 and the Joyo AS) are very similar, but not identical.

I'll just pose this question generally, to no one in particular: when people say 'one sounds better than the other' what does that actually mean?

I have the Vision, and I like it. My only complaint so far is that it is very hard to read the labels.
Oh the irony.

With regards to the 'cardigan over the speakers' I have same issue with my Joyo American Sound but not the knock off of the knock, Gokko Vintage Box. Which has a more clear high end but it's not at thick sounding as the Joyo.

Pretty much only using the Gokko for now. Planning on trying the mod to bypas the speaker sim EQ on the Joyo to see if I can get the clarity of the Gokko while keeping the fullness of the Joyo.

lol...it's ok, be proud. We could make a wrap for the pedals and call it the "incognito". that way nobody has to know

The sound engineer in one club where we played used to mix guitars with a Joyo American tone : straight to the PA, and the sound was really very good ! Now I always have one as a backup in my bag, in case of amp failure.
I am less convinced as an effect in my pedal board straight to the amp, I find the sound a bit muffled, maybe because of the speaker emulation that can't be disabled... as on the Tech 21.
But I can tell that it's the best bang for the buck I ever spent ! And it's super economical on batteries... it's been three years I use the same one

American Sound (Title)....Sorry I failed to mention that in my opening
I actually keep pictures of my Joyos on my phone as a quick reference for gigs or jams

-one photo shows both pedals dialed up for ' Fender guitars' ( into clean combo amps or PA)

- one photo is American Sound, '59 Bassman setting ( just a little breakup, and some midrange)- bold!

- AC-TONE dialed to 'clean up and brighten' my little 'Smokey Champ' amp ( a battery powered Smokey Amp paired up with a 8" alnico speaker, that sounds like a dirty blues little tweed)

lol...some of these discussions can go in a different direction than what was intended. I just wanted to say I got JAS and I think it sounds really good, how about a high five, tell me about yours. Comparing is ok if you are trying to decide which one to get, but after the purchase I either like it or not. To say,"it sounds better than" is vague and I translate that to mean they just like it better for whatever reason. Thier opion carries little weight

Mostly I posted the link because it includes those terrific graphs and good explanation by @J-Flanders as to how they are similar or different.

I've had one for a few years. I haven't actually used it in maybe two years but I bought and liked it around the time local sound guys started refusing to mic amps and insisting on plugging guitars in DI. The American Sound was a good solution to getting the Fender amp sounds I like in those kinds of situations.

I also found that the AS sounded good going direct into an interface for quick demo recordings as well as through a clean amp. For a while, the AS was constantly in my pedal bag for rehearsals, since it was easy to set and forget at jams and practices (rather than wasting others' time while I tweaked other overdrive pedals to sound right, which I'm willing to do for a formal recording or gig).

It's a good and affordable piece of kit.

The charts do show a difference. How do they chart sound like that? What type of meter? Now i'm curious
@J-Flanders describes the tools and methods in his series of posts somewhere. I don't recall the specifics offhand, but if dig in you'll find that info in there somewhere.

Edit: see post #18 for details on measurements and tools. Lot of info there.
