Last week I bit the bullet and ordered a Monoprice “Indio” electric guitar. I selected the Retro Classic, their most budget-friendly T-style. The specs include a basswood body, maple neck and fretboard and a toploading three-barrel bridge. I picked the solid blue body with a black pickguard.

I’d read many reviews and watched many YT videos about these guitars, and was aware of common issues with hardware, pickups and fretwork. I was willing to risk receiving a subpar instrument since I’d like to brush up on my setup, soldering and repair skills. It was really a win-win situation: get a crap guitar and have a project piece. Get a nice one and…..

It arrived yesterday morning. I was too much of a wimp to tell my wife I’d bought a guitar at Valentines Day, so I had it shipped to my office. (I can’t be the only one who’s done that.) Monoprice has an interesting shipping method: they wrap the guitar in thin foam sheeting and put it inside a padded gig bag, then pack that in a smallish cardboard box. This packing enables them to sell guitars with “gig bag included.” The box I received was in fairly rough shape but the guitar was unscathed.

For a guitar that cost less than $83 shipped, I can’t help but be impressed. The neck is essentially straight with the slightest hint of back bow. The frets feel great and there is ZERO barbed wire fret ends. Even the intonation was bang-on.

Of course there are negatives. Chief among them is the nut, which needs its edges rounded. The tuners were sticky and uneven, and will be the first upgrade. There is slight buzzing in the low E string, which I assume will disappear when I raise the saddle and tweak the truss rod.

I have not plugged into an amp yet, so the pickups are still a mystery. The action is nice and low with what look like 9s, and it has a pleasing acoustic tone. Like I said at the beginning of this post, I can’t help but be impressed with the value. These guitars are not for everybody, but for five-and-dimers like me, the bang for the buck factor is off the charts with the Indio Retro Classic. Currently on sale for $76.99 plus tax. For that price it’s kind of crazy if you DON’T buy one.

You'll have a fun guitar.

If you get into swapping electric bits, keep the stock pickups, replace the pots/switch/jack.
While swapping those, rewire with the Armstrong Blender mod, SSS spins to series HSH or anywhere between.

I have 2 Monoprice guitars. They're both excellent. First is their base model strat from before they started the "Indio" name. Mine just had an M on the headstock. The action was so low that I couldn't even bend the strings, but it had no buzz anywhere. No sharp frets at all. Cheap ceramic pickups were fine, but nothing special. I liked the guitar enough that I bought a loaded Classic Vibe strat pickguard (that cost more than the guitar) and put it in. Sounds and plays amazing. My only complaint is that the neck is way too thin, so as much as I like it, I'm going to get rid of it soon.

The other is the Boardwalk semi hollow. Bought it to flip, and it turns out to have a big fat neck that I love. Plays great. I even like how the cheap ceramic humbuckers sound.

So yeah, I'm a fan of Monoprice guitars.

Funny that you said your shipping box was beat. We have bought two Indio guitars from Monoprice for two of our gransons and one came with the box completely beat to heck and a big gouge out of the guitar body. Luckily Monoprice replaced it and that one the box was also pretty bad but the guitar was fine. They use a shipping company called OnTrac which according to the internet reviews has a very poor rating. But back to the guitars, both we have bought were very nice. First one was a Strat copy and had a very nice neck and frets. The second was a bass and the fret work wasn't as good, but still a decent guitar.

That is a nice looking axe for not much cash. The finish is just fine. Even if you do some major upgrades it will still wont break the bank. If my guitar project budget was the same as yours I don't think I would have to keep any secrets from "Her in doors". I would not have to deal with the stern look and shaking of the head when I gave her the dollar figure that she was really wanting me to give over. :)

Same here. I have a real 2018 Fender Deluxe Nashville upgraded with a really expensive custom Musikraft neck (like I have $1500 in it counting the Fender TSA case). But the guitar I play most of the time is an 2009 SX STL-50 (a Nashville type) I paid $110 for, and I replaced the neck with a low-end Musikraft with compound radius and stainless frets ($260) and it plays better than most of the guitars I've owned over the last 60 years.

I have one ..I really like it.. I had to do the neck wack but after that it pretty good.. It really sounds great with the Wilkinson broadcaster pickup in the bridge , the neck pickup ( ceramic) I really like as is.
