People here love to complain about Craigslist. Half the people complain that when they are selling, all they get are lowball offers. The other half of the people complain that when they are buying, all the stuff is overpriced. Of course both things are often true.

For today's exhibit, this guy near me wants $180 for a used Fender Mustang I amp. Should I tell him you can buy one brand new at the store for $139?

Yeah, the shrewd bargain hunters out there will definitely pounce on that one.

I find that most CL sellers are often wildly unrealistic about the resale value of their stuff.
Particularly guitars that have been modded/upgraded.
They want the new buyer to pay for their often unsuccessful mods.
I cringe every time I see a MIM Tele with a $500-700 asking price, no matter how many hardware/pickup upgrades it gets.
Either install the original parts and ask $300-ish, or sell it with the mods for the same price.
    Oh well, let em’ languish.

The Craigslist offer is 70W though, clearly a superior upgrade to stock model.

P.S. I'm trying to imagine how tight the move is if you can't fit a Mustang I into it.

P.P.S. I also noticed the CL offer is V1, much more collectible than the V2 in the new listing.

    I kid, I kid...

Let me guess: for 9 months the ad has had "PRICE DROP!!" in the header?

I love craigslist and buy/sell there all the time, but what kills me is when people list custom-made guitars by local builders nobody has ever heard of for upwards of $1,000. True, they are probably excellent instruments, but people pay for names on the headstock.

    .

You can't blame them too much ... "I'm selling it for what I have in it".

Plus they checked all the CL/Reverb/Ebay (high) prices so "I know what it's worth", without checking the recent actually sold prices.

New factory guitar prices get increased every year ... so wait enough years and a ten year old used guitar will sell for as much as it originally sold for new... just a lot of work to keep re-listing every month for a decade.

I don't mean to sound like I'm excusing the vast number of idiots and morons buying AND selling on Craigslist, because I'm beginning to believe too many are not just ignorant, but also deliberately larcenous in their intentions.
But I've come across more than just a few who have taken an item in payment for a debt, and are told something is worth "$X" when it's not worth near that. Or some co-worker says oh yeah, my cousin had one of those and it sold for $????, when in reality it never did. The great thing about CL is it doesn't cost anything to post.....the bad thing is, it doesn't cost anything to post. It ENCOURAGES every flake and goofball to get on there and list their c**p for ridiculous prices......what have they got to lose for trying?

I posted a PSA on CL when someone in my area was selling some gear used for more than you could buy it new for. He posted another ad calling me out, but he confirmed what I was saying at the same time. I forgot what he said but it seemed like he was trying to get me to respond in some way. So, I didn't. He appeared to be running the same ad in multiple nearby CL marketplaces. It had to be some kind of scam.

I've been seeing that listing for years without paying much attention to it. I recall a while back wondering whether it was the same seller this whole time, or if the guitar had been sold and re-sold multiple times because it's a lemon.

The smartest marketing guy I knew (one of the few) explained to me years ago that price doesn't determine whether a thing sells, it determines how quickly a thing sells. I've known people who put their houses on the market at ridiculous prices not caring who might think they were idiots. They weren't trying to sell the house, but if someone was willing to pay an exorbitant price, they'd take it. Some of these CL listings are the same, I suspect.

Years from now he'll be selling that "Original Mustang Power cord" on Craigslist for $150. Who will look stupid then?
