This one's going to be a radical departure from anything I've done previously. I'm still designing as I go along, so things may change a little bit.

I started with a McInturff Carolina as my base line:

    And made two templates:

Why 2? Well, I'm hoping to do something akin to this, but on both wings, so I need a template for the contoured top section:

I've got some ribbon sapele glued up for the body:

And this heavily-figured claro walnut will be the top:

I'm going with gold hardware with a Hipshot Baby Grand bridge, Graphtec Ratio tuners, and some special PAF pickups.

The neck will be at least a 3 piece but may end up being 5 with flamed maple and walnut, and the fretboard's going to be black Richlite. The plastics (pickup rings, switch tip, and truss rod cover) will be cream.

I'm just going to have 1 vol/2 tone setup with amber knobs.

I think that's everything for now.

Great concept - I love anything with deep carves in the body work.

Very cool! I’m building up my courage to do a Lester style guitar with a walnut top, maybe in a build or two. I’ll be following your thread with great interest. That top is going to be outrageous!

Looks like a cool design. You didn’t mention anything about a pick guard though.

Thanks, Mark. I'm hoping it turns out as cool IRL as it does in my mind.

    Thanks, Eric.

Thanks, Brandon. I've got a lot of figuring out to do on this one. We'll see how it goes.

    Thanks, man.

Thanks. I'm thinking no pickguard on this one.

    :D

Thanks, Reb. I just hope I don't screw anything up too terribly badly.

The top templates are done. I think...

I spent quite a bit of time working on the contours. I think they're ok. I'll definitely sleep on it for a few days and look at them with new eyes throughout the week to see if the design still pleases me by next weekend.

My top wood is 3/4" thick, so the plan is to take the wings down to 1/4".

Looking good Rog. So, I expect some unsuspecting hall owner is going to walk into his hall and fall through a hole in the floor?

Looks great Rog! If it was my design I'd just change the back carve where (both sides meet the back end) to a rounded semi-circle edge about the size of a golf ball just to continue the rounded, flowing theme of the front section. To my eye the back carve looks a bit too sharp and out of place.

However it's your baby and I know it will turn out great!

And in the process of jointing the bottom face flat, this happened:

So now my jointer's out of commission until I can get some new bearings on

I've been kinda high-centered on this one trying to figure out the neck joint and neck style. I decided to do a set neck with an LP style headstock angle, so I ordered an LP template set to use as a starting point.

Rather than doing an LP-styled tenon, though, I decided to extend the neck taper out. The mortise will still end up being narrower than the pickup rout, so it should work out just fine.

I'm shooting for something similar to this when it's all said and done:

I need to take about 5/16" off my body thickness, but it's too wide to send through my planer, so I may revamp the body width slightly so it'll fit.

After I get that sorted, I'll chamber the body and then glue on the top.

Still a lot to do on this one. I knew it was going to take a while since I'm designing as I go.

Quite nice, and great departure from the Tele's you've been doing. Subscribed.
