My friend is a one guitar guy. He has a black Les Paul. He has it for probably 30+ years. And it is not a Gibson. Not an Epiphone either. It is an EKO guitar, apparently an Italian company. And yeah, he only plays that guitar.
His wife, son and daughter bought him a Fender Strat for his 50th birthday. And he doesnt like it! I tried to explain to him... well you know, a strat can give you some really cool sounds, it is much more dynamic etc. But he wouldnt listen.
But anyway, he is my dear friend and I respect him.

Brian May comes to mind. The only electric guitars he uses are his original Red Special, two replicas to "lighten the load", so to speak, on the original instrument in terms of play wear and damage, a hollow body version of the Red Special, and a Telecaster.

doesn't mean he didn't own other guitars, just that he had a #1 he played

It probably has more about the music they play, if they've changed their sound over the years, and just personal choice.

Firearms and footwear - the two most common things I use to explain "why more than one?"

Context - do ya wear chucks while riding horses?
Do ya wear 18" high python cowboy boots while shooting hoops?
    Wingtips while fishing?
    Hip-waders in court? (Sometimes necessary...)

Carry a Derringer while shooting skeet?
    Bring a 12 gauge to a friendly card-game?
    Context

    Peace - Deeve

If I could have just owned one guitar I'd have certainly saved a lot of money, I think in the past I may have have owned / sold / traded 35 guitars in one year!

My teacher was a mostly forgotten jazzer named Lloyd Ellis, and he had one guitar for the last 30ish years of his life - a 60s Gibson Johnny Smith.

Here is is playing it a few years before he died (around 3 mins is where things pick up):

I played in a band with a guy who has only just sold his 1963 RED L-SERIES stratocaster ( Rosewood board). i believe he's been the only owner till recently.
Mind you - having played it, I can understand why.
It's beat up and is on sale for $ 19,5000 AUD in a boutique store.
