If you hit gold with a certain guitar then it can definitely be a boon. Then again you could rely on it too much and never explore which is a bad thing.

    Was it a tele?
If I had to have *only* one, I'm pretty sure it'd be a tele, although I've not played one regularly for years now

I've had ONE of my guitars for 36 years...

I have to agree about collecting and consumerism, though. I've gotten better--I only NEED the five I've got now. OK, six, but one's just wall art/campfire fun.

Well as my pappy used to say, “Some people like to play guitar and some people like guitars.”

They aren’t mutually exclusive, but you get my point. I like to play and do often, but I also have more than I need cause I like guitars.

A guy in my band has a 74 Les Paul Standard that he bought new in 74, and it's the only electric guitar he has ever owned since then. He's travelled the world with that guitar and 1000's of gigs of rock n roll. Today it looks like a heavy relic, but it's all legit wear and tear.

I've seen a thousand gigs/concerts over the years, Glenn Hansard possibly delivered the best I've seen

Some folks like to keep stuffs a long time until they fall apart and are beyond repair. I tend to do that with clothes, shoes, furniture, whatever. I don't play enough guitar to wear them out.

Might be some fetichism or superstition sort of way of thinking.

Kayton Roberts, Hank Snow's late-great steel player, said that his double-neck steel is the only one he used throughout his long career.

IMO A man satisfied with himself only needs 1 guitar....they who own one guitar are very happy men indeed. I would trade all my guitars to be ignorantly happy unknowing and naive.

Neil Young sure has played a few other guitars in the past but this one certainly comes to mind...Old Black. He has played this guitar consistently throughout his career. It shows in the wear. It is originally a 1953 Gold Top that he acquired in trade with Jim Messina in 1968 for his '58 Gretsch. As the years have passed it has been gradually customized & modified ever since.

I’ve played with quite a few guys over the years who weren’t gear heads, just had one guitar and stuck with it.

    I actually admire that.

Having lots of guitars is a modern thing. When I was a teenager in bands you had an electric and an acoustic, and one of them would be really cheap.

In fact, until I joined this forum about 10 years ago I didn't realise people would have more than 2 or 3.

I still only have one of each type. I wouldn't see the point of duplication.

What kind of technique rubs the finish off above the hole?

That whole article is weird ....if you write that fast, do you have to go relearn it when it's showtime? Or maybe I'm jealous of that proficiency.
