Amps Which Aren't Fools Gold

    Picked up a 1968 Realistic (Univox U45B clone) a few months back. Swapped out the filter caps and two prong cord but output showed to be weak. Put in a a Ted Weber alnico and the thing lit up. Moral of the story, sometimes a 50 year old speaker does not stand up to the test of time:)

    I agree 100%, but I've also advised new players that nothing will kill their desire to practice deader than gear they don't like. It's worth spending more (or less!) to get an instrument you can't wait to pick up every day. Saving $100 by buying a guitar you hate playing just means you wasted whatever money you spent on that guitar.
