Ok, imagine you're using an amp sim pedal (or a preamp, or even an actual amp that's loaded down to line level).

You wanna go into a speaker cabinet emulator (maybe a UA Ox Stomp, maybe a TC Electronic IR Loader pedal).

You also wanna use a digital delay pedal. You know you want to use the delay AFTER the amp sim.

Do you insert the digital delay BETWEEN the amp sim source and the speaker emulator device?

Or do you put the delay AFTER the speaker emulator device?

Pros/cons? Reasons?

EDIT: I'm aware that there's no "right" or "wrong" way... So I'm not asking about the "correct" way to do this. I'm asking what your preference is, and why. Thanks in advance!

I put delay and reverb at the end in my direct rig (after Two Notes CAB M+).

My personal monitor has a through XLR output that goes to FOH. If you don’t have that option then you’ll need a direct box with an XLR output, ideally.

Where you position effects, affects the way they sound.
If you want it to sound like an old EchoPlex, put delay first.
If you want it to sound like it's in your effects loop, put delay between amp sim and cab sim.
If you want it to sound like a studio console effect, put delay last.

This is a good point. You do have some flexibility based on your personal preference. There’s no right or wrong.

Still, it’s best to send an XLR to FOH. Whatever it takes to make that happen.

Unless the run is considerably more than 20 ft., nobody will know the difference. I used to play in a band using nothing but my Boss GT-100, and ran the 1/4" outs to the mixer, and it sounded fine, but the mixer was on stage and the FOH sound guy mixed it using an iPad via BlueTooth.

Yeah, I realize there's no "correct/incorrect" way to do it. I'm asking for your preference and reasoning. Thanks all!

Fair enough.

To reiterate with a bit more detail, my direct rig is:

Various pedals > Strymon Riverside (preamp/amp in a box) > CAB M+ (IR loader/cab sim) > delay > reverb/tremolo > FRFR/personal monitor > FOH.

I prefer delay and reverb/tremolo last because that sounds more natural to me.
