I personally like to have the knobs/controls on the front, because I always keep my amp tilted back, which makes top-mounted controls a bit of a pain to get to. What do you prefer?

Bluetooth controls mounted on a wristband. Everything else is a compromise.

I have amps with either top or front, but prefer the front, BF/SF Fender style
( I just sit in front of my amps, and will tweak controls just a little during gigs)

If I were to design one myself. I’d say front. But can’t say it’s ever really bothered me anyway. I’ve had both

BF amps have the perfect ergonomics. Almost actually, if it wasnt for the power/standby switches in the back.

Whichever way the amp I like the sound of the most has them.

But if I designed it, I'd do them in the front pointing up a bit like on a blackface Fender.

    Front preferably....Top is fine too...

But back forget it! That was the main reason I sold my Swart AST. Best sounding amp I've ever played but the ergonomics of it are fails.

Front. Two of my current amps have them on top, which is whatever, but my first real amps all had front controls (sf fenders, 80s fender, peaveys) so I started off accustomed to being able to see them when the amp was elevated, on a stand, or across the room.

My first exposure to top mounted controls in an environment other than a store was when my dad bought a HRDLX. Seemed less practical.

My 5e5 and supro both have top mounted knobs, and it's not a deal breaker. They both are fine on a stand or the ground (I've contemplated legs for the supro, its feet are spaced so that one side feet ride the arm of the amp stand...) but I haven't gigged with either yet. The 5e5 I'm familiar with and used to enough to blindly reach, feel 3 knobs, and know exactly what each does without looking, at least if I was using one of the 3 guitars I run with it most often. The Supro I dont remember what guitar at what master/volume level sounded best at what eq settings, so its kind of a pain. I need to write up some charts and stash them in the back.

But fronts best. You can see everything (except arguably pull out knobs, but both amps I own with those I know for sure which knob is pulled out....) .

If the original electric guitar amps had controls on front at the top, no major brand would have bothered moving them.

Marshall-style seems most practical, with the electronics below the heat.

Fender-style is aesthetically pleasing and has an ease of use.

I have a Vox. [ED: TWO.]

    1) Front with the panel angled.
    2) Front, as my amp is usually raised up sitting flat on a crate.
    3) Top is fine except for when needing to tilt back (i.e. no crate handy!)

Most amps have front controls, I'd say. Does anybody move the controls for the head version of an amp? I think pretty much all heads have the knobs same place the combos do. All Vox heads, for instance -- top.

Although I could be not thinking of some obvious examples.

I had a couple Traynor amps with top controls.

I own both and don’t have a big preference.

I prefer top for smaller combos sitting on the floor so that I don’t have to stoop to see the controls. For heads on top of cabs, I prefer front controls.

Control placement is very low on my list of priorities when picking out an amp though.

I tend to agree. I usually do a “set and forget” with my amp, and tweak it with my PUP selection, vol and tone knobs, and the occasional effects pedal.
