There are 18.6 million.... millionaires in the United States.

There are almost 400,000 millionaires in New York City.

A guy who makes 20 million per film wouldn't blink an eye at a 97K price tag.

There is a guy I know (socially) who has a huge garage at his house with probably 30 cars.... on the high end, a couple are over a million dollars in value and the low end is still many hundreds of thousands. He made his money in cabling and (wait for it) Carpet cleaning and disaster recovery (like when your house floods

I'd guess he is worth like 100 million dollars. These guitars, if that was his thing, would be all over his house... he made his money through hard work and he likes to have fun and I say, 'alright then!'

He made it, he gets to have what he wants, right?

I'd actually be happy to pay a bit more for an old guitar if someone had had it re-fretted, upgraded the wiring, replaced the pots/switches, replaced a sloppy tuner or two, and replaced the old brittle plastic bits.

But that's just me, buying a guitar. And obviously why I don't have an old Lester.

Good point, surely there is no financial gain in parting out an original ‘57 LP?

IF and only if they did a good job on it. The problem with modified gear is that you cannot have expectations of quality.

My examples would be a hamburger from a stranger or from mcdonalds when you are traveling. Sure, the mcdonalds preparation may be bland and boring, but there are few surprises and you can expect it to taste familiar and be predictable.

the unknown burger MIGHT be the best you've ever had or be made with cat meat.

So, when it comes to buying 'vintage' stuff, people like to know that what they are getting is original and then they have a basis for what they want to do next.

This is true with classic cars and trucks too.

Maybe a decimal point in the wrong place...some people don't proof read the ads they post. Lack of experience in Business.

Sucker born every minute and some people just have too much money.

How could anyone possibly verify the year ?

I never met a Client who got rich by being a stupid pushover...

Simply not worth it to me.

    Unless I was selling it.

Just think what the Venus de Milo would be worth if you could find original vintage arms to install.....;)

I for sure don't know the answer to this question, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the people paying 4K plus for this? I'm betting that they have this **** down. Just a guess, but otherwise you run out of 4K players pretty quick I'd say.

Then again, if you're a crook trying to sell a counterfeit vintage collector Les Paul guitar, spending a few grand here and there for parts that would help you fool someone into paying $50,000, $100,000 or $200,000 for your counterfit would be chickenfeed.

All I know is there is a builder not far from here who makes very spendy Lester inspired guitars. Changed the shape somewhat, but the surface area of each half is supposed to be that of a LP. Apparently he was not satisfied with the pickup rings available, so had his own more accurate ones made for him at great expense. For a guitar that isn’t even LP shaped. Kinda nuts if you ask me.

    Cheers,
    Geoff

And I thought $60 for an original Mosrite pickup ring was bad!
