Tape echoes in large boxes was the only thing around then. No pedals as such yet.

oh the slippery slippery slope of our road to trance techno and gabba.
slaves of synchronized thump thump thump thumping four on the floor tyranny of Giorgio Moroder goose stepping
to the layered sounds of endless dribbling arpeggiators.
I beseech you, where will it end?

It will end when the trust fund runs out. Then they'll have to do Abba covers to afford shoes for the baby and a minivan.

Ever read Cormac McCarthy's Suttree? It captures the situations to which your post alludes better than anything since...Lenin? It's a great book, though tough sledding in spots.

"Novelist Nelson Algren argued that the novel was "a memorable American comedy by an original storyteller."[4] Estimable reviews by such noted writers and literary critics as Anatole Broyard,[5] Jerome Charyn,[6] Guy Davenport,[7] and Shelby Foote[8] were followed by the Times Literary Supplement review which saw the novel as "Faulknerian in its gentle wryness, and a freakish imaginative flair reminiscent of Flannery O'Connor."[9] The influential profile writer and music journalist Stanley Booth observed that Suttree was "probably the funniest and most unbearably sad of McCarthy's books...which seem to me unsurpassed in American literature."[

No never use a delay on the floor...

I've added it in post production on a direct recording though, but that's a totally different thing.

I've messed around with delay but never used it to play or on a recording except for some tight slapback to for some songs I feel need a bit of extra flavor.
I don't hate it I just haven't found a good use for it yet.
Now that I think about it, my 6 year old stepdaughter will probably have all kinds of fun when she discovers the delay on the Black star Fly 3 she's getting soon.
Backtracking a bit I did record some feedback while manipulating the knobs on one of those old Peavey delays years ago in my old band. We ended up using it in a noisy instrumental bridge because it sounded so unsettling.
I kind of miss that pedal. I currently have a Danelectro Dan Echo which I do like.

I stopped using delay. I was using it with an old Bassman that had no reverb, but now I’m using a Vox that has reverb. So it’s kinda redundant. Muddy. So I cleaned up my sound. No delay.

I worship at the altar of The Edge. My dream is to create a U2/heavy metal crossover. With whacky Tom Morello and Radiohead sounds. Who also use a LOT of delay. I like delays a lot, heavy and in your face. None of this subtle background stuff. But that's me and effects in general. Give me extreme sounds, not subtle standard middle of the road guitar tones. I want Pterodactyl noises, dammit!

I prefer reverb unless it's some big effect. You mentioned the distortion/OD sounding horrible. Make sure it's after the OD/Distortion. It naturally compresses and over accentuates the delay. I prefer almost all pedals of reverb or delay after other pedals. That doesn't count some cool creative sounds you can create.

It's not that I don't like them, but to me they're a toy for just playing around. I've owned 2 (good ones too, vintage boss analog delay and a more recent dod rubberneck) and sold them both.
