I’ve named all the really good ones I’ve owned, actually they tend to name themselves. Out of 40 years of buying guitars, working in music stores etc,... only 6 have had names. Out a life time of guitars. Becky, Wall-E, Coal, Maryanne, Mei, Eva.

I refer to the Strat as old blue, because it's old and blue but it's really known as the Strat. The Tele and Epi are also called just that.

I did have an input in naming the kids. Though they do answer to hey, shut up and sit down.

No names here. Out of several guitars I don't even have a #1. They all pretty much get equal time.

If they have a name, they tell it to me. If they don’t, I don’t give them one. For example, my ESP is simply “the ESP”. Big Red is Big Red. My Tele that my brother built me is simply “that Tele my brother built me”. My Mustang is George. My D’Angelico is “the D’Angelico”. My Les Paul’s name is Wilma.

I don’t go out of the way and force names on them. That would be weird. But if they have one and tell it to me, it seems weird not to use it. You have to listen to your instruments. And your car too, for that matter. They’ll tell you what’s up. Sometimes a guitar tells me it really doesn’t belong to me, and wants to move on in its search for its real owner. I respect that as well.

People can argue about absolutely anything. The truly silly choice is to care one tiny bit whether or not someone else names their guitars. We don't need a "yeah, those guys are dumb" consensus on this one in either direction. Do what you like. The "stares and comments" reaction to not naming a guitar is something I've never experienced, read about, or even heard of in over 25 years of playing guitar, and in interactions with musician friends on four continents - until this thread.

There's also the opposite of that: studio guys that refer to everything by its model number.

"Did you bring the HSP 790 i4s?"

    "Yeah, here's your headphones. "

Never, but my wife the bass player, names all of her basses and her guitars. I do name my cars, four wheeler and motorcycles though. The canoe is a "she" for some odd reason, but I am not going to let Freud ruin that one.

BTW, I do not name my chainsaws. Thought you might want to know.

I haven’t named them all, and I only refer to one of them by her name when speaking about her.

    And that would be Shelby.

Oh-oh, looks like I'll never be in the "never a namer" club .... I have in jest called a few of my things a name, Old Red for my Tele, relative to Neil's Old Black; and I had an old Ampeg Jet that someone had covered in red and white tolex, and we called her Auntie Peg the Old Red Head.

I've never named a guitar or a car, except for a band van named "Sister Earl". I do have a bassoon named "Lilac" though, because the previous owner doused the case with something that smells like lilac aftershave. Since most old wind instruments smell like vintage spittoon, lilac is a distinct improvement.

    I don't name stuff.

Anthropomorphization of an inanimate object is just illogical.

I wonder if there is a correlation to personality type or similar. For example, I struggle to remember people's names but I can always remember their "function"...programmer, welder, owns a tree service, 3rd grade teacher at such-and-such school, etc. My guitars don't names and I even catch myself thinking little about the name and more about the general type (which are often brands/models, obviously).
