I think maybe Dizze Gillespie came up with that intro, at least I`ve read that somewhere. Listen to the great "jazz at massey hall" from `53

also check out this, Billy Eckstine - Good Jelly Blues from `44. Quite similar huh?
:p Dizzy Gillespie plays in the band here. I guess you could hear where he got the inspiration for the attya intro...

Yes, both those pre-date (significantly) the Evans version I remember.

In the 'original' original version from the show "Very Warm For May" there is sort of a similar harmonic transition from the verse to the chorus (refrain), which is what we play when the tune is called. All these tunes have a whole other verse that is rarely ever played or sung.

Thanks for that link. Yup, lots of these tunes have other verses thats never played. I`ve got some complete Cole Porter books (with original piano comping/voicings), and theres lots of stuff in there we never play when we play some Porter tunes. But what was interesting was checking out the original comping for well known standard tunes. `cause I really hate some of the new fakebooks that are way to "detailed" when it comes to the chords. I really want just the basic chords, and add my own reharms, voicings and stuff.

No, I`m not, so thanks for the link. But I really like to have the melody written down as well :)

Me too. The idea behind his book is to show that 'stripped down' SO many of those tunes are similar if not the same.
*Also, he never would have been able to offer it 'free' with the melodies (on his personal website) - licensing/copyright issues.

Yeah, true. Thats why I like to have the melodies there, as so many of the tunes are so similar. I hate to hear jazz guys just blowing through the changes, without any connecting to the melody and the tune itself.

    Thanks man.

*Thanks for the 'tone' compliments all of you.
If you listen with headphones or good speakers there's a lot ambience, both the room and from a delay, that are in/on these solo tracks.

I've been struggling for two months playing this song with quarter note drop 2s on the four treble strings. Your version inspires me to keep plodding along, hoping I can graduate to the middle strings and chord-melody sometime in 2013.

If it's any consolation, I've been playing that tune for 30 years.
