He was the Box Tops lead singer? I met him in a bar in Durango, CO in 1969 . . . really nice and polite young man. Great gravelly voice!
Hate to admit it, but I wasn't truly aware of who he was until The Replacements came out with this in the '80s and then I took notice:
Greatest 'anti-music video' ever made!
I too came a little late to the party, but this album changed my life...
Never heard this before. A song about Alex Chilton?
I always keep all three Big Star cds in my car, and couple compilations of solo Chilton stuff.
I always liked their cover of "Duke Of Earl"
Big Star's #1 Record is essential listening...
Somehow he completely stopped doing the "gravelly voice" thing after The Box Tops.
I never travel far without a little Big Star.
I go through a little town in the North of Alabama (Town Creek I think) and there's a failed super market building there with the Big Star sign out front on the highway. It starts the Chilton/Bell discography going between my ears for sure!
I have a red haired friend who was (she says) engaged to Chris at one time. I owe her a telephone call.
