alesis microverb 3 on/off switch

so i just bought a alesis microverb 3 my first rack effect im pretty oblivious to how to use them as of now and im not to sure as to how to control the unit on stage wise like it says it has a defeat jack does that mean it can be turned off using some kind of stompbox thing?

if so would it be possible to just build an on/off stompbox
is it easy?

or should i just buy one or something
