When you see an ad and the price of something is wildly off, do you drop the seller an email to tell them how to determine the true value, or let them figure it out on their own? If the price is way too low, you can either snap it up for a steal, or tell them what it’s really worth so they can realize a better price. I don’t care about that scenario. We’ve had that debate here plenty of times and it’s never super pleasant.

I’m curious about what y’all do when somebody wants way too much for what they have. For example, this poor guy’s brother-in-law owes him $2000, and he accepted this (what looks to me to be) 1992 American Standard Telecaster in lieu of cash. To me that’s a $1000 guitar on its very best day, and I’m pretty sure that’s where the market is at too.

Do you let it sit on Craigslist clogging up your feed, while he wonders why nobody wants his guitar, or do you let him know that his brother-in-law may be trying to get over on him? Asking for a friend.

I generally don't want to deal or negotiate with people asking double what I think something is worth. If he can't be bothered to look up the fair price of the instrument, I wouldn't involve myself.

He'll figure it out on his own, or maybe he'll get lucky and find a sucker.

Anyone who "plays guitars" and has a brother-in-law who "is amazing and builds and services his own instruments" knows what the guitar is actually worth. Trying to tell them the truth will either make them mad or cause an argument. I've not got time to waste on things like that.

That would be a full time job in my area... everyone lists above retail over here. There are items I’ve seen listed for way over a year getting bumped.

Let me be clear - I have absolutely no interest in buying or playing this guitar. If a guitar is sunburst it better have some other features that outrank that truly detestable finish. And a modern bridge ain’t it.

I mostly feel bad for this guy, and since I look through Craigslist every day, I imagine I’m going to have to feel bad for him a lot of times.

Recently I contacted the TDPRI mods to request an "ignore thread" feature for pretty much the same reason. I feel ya.

I saw that ad and thought the same thing. If he’s willing to hold on until that gets him the $2K he as owed, that’s cool for him.

The ad says "do not contact me with unsolicited services or offers".

If you were interested in buying the guitar, your call would be appropriate. Since you are not, don't waste his time and yours.

I usually have a little chuckle and go on. I see that where people take something in lieu of a debt, and wonder if it's true or just another form of a scam. At any rate, not my problem.....or as Ford Prefect would put it, an "SEP".....(somebody else's problem)

The three questions that my sponsor mandates before I speak if I haven't been asked directly...Does it need to be said? Does it need to be said now? Does it need to be said by me? if the answer to ANY of those is "no", I've been told that my best action is to remain silent.

I've learned a lot about avoiding future Amends by
    a) listening to My sponsor
    and
    b) following good suggestions offered by somebody elses' sponsor...

Only if it was worth far more than they were asking.
