We have to prop our way of life up with something!
LOL... that describes the hippies of my generation to a T. No interest in the social causes at all. It was all about going to see Phish and smoking Pot and dressing up as a hippy.
we have met the enemy.he is us...
I did time as an ad hack early in my makin'-a-livin' years, almost 20 years. I never made huge money. Maybe that was because I sold space when the real money was starting to go to air. . . . Now it's moving toward clouds?
While I'm disclaiming stuff, I'd add that "White Rabbit" isn't the Airplane's best song, IMO, but just their biggest pop hit. I wore out two copies of Surrealistic Pillow in my youth.
And my San Francisco comment has to do with the music, not the teams. The Avalon Ballroom, the Fillmore Auditorium. . . .
I'm subbing today in a friendamine's English class. I wonder if I could sub for an ad hack?
I hate it when you pull your punches.
I NEVER got the sense that the Dead were about social change or social issues at all. The Dead were always about the scene and, well, DRUGS.
That's a great link, thanks for posting it. I felt no better after reading it, though. Break from reality--pssh. I'm not angry about this, I know it's not the first song that's been exploited to peddle product, but it seems somehow like drawing a moustache on the Mona Lisa, disrespectful of the art that was the original intent, and that's separate from whether Leonardo or Grace got paid for the commercial. Not to say that "White Rabbit" compares with the Mona Lisa, but it was meant to be art.
Go ask Alice, I think she'll know...
someone earlier said "Poor Grace?"
last i heard, she was still alive and doing something artistically fulfilling to her. always had a celeb crush on her, kinda.
did something happen? she looked healthy in her last media appearance i came across. something or other on youtube
Ads today are being written by people born in the 1990s who have no memories or knowledge of anything that happened before 2000. I realized this when I heard some pronouncing Detroit’s “Shinola” company as “shin-oh-lah.” Obviously, I thought, they don’t know...(fill in the blank)
a) Would you rather listen to some nonsensical jingle or White Rabbit as long as your viewing is interrupted?
b) Are you unhappy that Grace and JA are getting some money? (lots usually)
c) why are you watching TV that has commercials?
Every group and artist we love with a notable few will take the cash and smile. You have to be really rich to be proud or have nothing in the game.
the AD, not the song. Sheesh....
Disrespectful? White Rabbit's a rock song that its author dismisses as a "Bolero ripoff." I can see where you might think of it as an anthem for a time and place, much the same as Jimi's take on The Star Spangled Banner. But it's not a doxology. There's nothing holy about it. It's understandable that it holds special meaning or memories for you. Lots of songs do that for lots of people. But I'd suggest that to hold it sacrosanct puts far too much value on it.
As for the Mona Lisa with a mustache, Dadaist Marcel Duchamp did it in 1919.
you think we know the Assistant Director?
that looks just like a girl I knew in high school... she is the reason I know the word hirsute.
was she a Dadaist?
P Thought is a good sport. It needs to be said.
