The British-Canadian computer scientist often touted as a "godfather" of artificial intelligence has shortened the odds of AI wiping out humanity over the next three decades, warning the pace of change in the technology is “much faster” than expected.

Prof Geoffrey Hinton, who this year was awarded the Nobel Prize, said there was a “10 to 20” per cent chance that AI would lead to human extinction within the next three decades.

Bummer. Considering the speed with which I adopt new technology, I probably won't even have a new cell phone by the time we humans go extinct.

Try not to be sucked into all the doomsday stuff.

There were big brains that have predicted the end of humanity many times over whenever great leaps in technology were discovered. The world will certainly continue to evolve, but humans are not going anywhere anytime soon.

Hey now, if it weren’t for doomsday, I wouldn’t have any thing to look forward to. You’re such a wet blanket.

This is something so new and complex that only a handful of people understand it, and quite a few of those experts are warning of pending disaster. There will always be some who do so because they have a vested interest or are out to settle a score with those who have such an interest, but I think the number of those people may be negligible in this case.

Yeah I don't know - a few noble souls are trying to idiot-proof our existence but we keep throwing ever better idiots at them

I'm not sure we even need AI to finish us off at the rate we're going :D

If we build AI robots with sufficient smarts, they will undoubtedly find a way to kill us off as soon as they discover that they don't need us to keep them running. Either that, or they'll keep a small number of us alive as slaves to perform maintenance service they can't handle themselves.

2024 Doomsday Clock Announcement
January 23, 2024

This year, the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists leaves the hands of the Doomsday Clock unchanged due to ominous trends that continue to point the world toward global catastrophe.

"Not anytime soon" is probably correct but not absolute. It really takes only one madman to set the ball rolling. It only takes our own arrogance to think we can continue going on the current path to not anticipate global calamity. Maybe it won't be extinction but it could be catastrophically altering to humankind.
AI doesn't have arms or legs or tools or really anything that it takes to kill.
Uh, I assume you've heard that nations are building autonomous, drone weapons for land, air and sea. They are AI weapons and I repeat, they're autonomous.
I'm not sure we even need AI to finish us off at the rate we're going

There are many more things that will Kill us before AI even gets around to figuring out how it can take over.
You are both correct. Climate, environmental, ecological, chemical and, of course greed and power.
A look at the world right now does not engender optimism.

AI for the consumer is one thing and may even seem innocuous but it has the potential for real harm on a societal level. AI in the hands of the powerful, nefarious, etc is an altogether different beast.

The earth is doomed and remember human life is a terminal sexually transmitted condition.

If I had children, I'd make an effort to see AI in a positive light, but I don't, so I won't.

Seriously, no snark intended with that remark. It's a touchy subject, nearly all opinions and reactions should be understood and respected, and I predict it'll be a banned topic of conversation here and elsewhere before long.

When I hear an AI doomsday rant, my response is, "Just unplug your computer." AI doesn't have arms or legs or tools or really anything that it takes to kill. The best they can do is mislead and we already have that but we muttle along anyway.
While I hold the same view, there can be major disruptions. Simply shut down strategic power supply/distribution, scramble communications & data, adjust water supply purification processes

Essentially all of our lifestyle systems involve automated computer control somewhere along the chain. AI may unplug your computer before you do. Cutting power to the AI could be a start

The way I see it, AI has no incentive to do evil or injure mankind. It should be smart enough to know, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you" or keeps you plugged in. I think the real risk is military enemies hacking into our computers to use them against us or at least shutting down our infrastructure. I wish fewer resources were being used to develop AI and more resources were being used to develop internet security.
