Anyone aged silvery Fender grillcloth to try and get it to match better with a vintage piece?

I build this cab to match a vintage Bandmaster (branding obfuscated to comply with site terms), my customer wishes it matched better:

    1) Does the tea soak work well?

    2) Thoughts on removing the baffle/speaker and SPRAYING it with tea, outside in the blasted FL heat, with the intent of aging it without having to remove the cloth.

    Opinions please. :)

Our friend @jsnwhite619 recently tea'd off some silver cloth in this thread. :)

Couple hours did it for me. Checked every 30 minutes or so, but it worked better than I expected.

Golden oak minwax wasn't bad for a yellowed look too. Didn't go with it, but viable option.

I tried tea once, it seemed to do very little. The cloth is plastic so you are relying on it to just dry on the surface... it doesn't really "stain". Many swear by Min Wax sprays, pecan I think, or various shades. Oak too yellow, Pecan a bit too brown. I've not found one I really liked, but have had the luxury of having some Larry Rogers aged cloth around for the last several years.
That dove grey like your head looks is a bit hard to find in the right spray stuff. I often wonder if very lightly sprayed dove grey paint would do it?

Yes just spray it on the baffle is fine.

This is the one I just did using tea.

I know a guy that bought a boatload of Larry's stuff after he passed away. He used tea, according to what I've been told.[IMG][IMG]

Maybe try staining the cloth and re-cover both so they match?

The only rap I have on tea is if it ends up gray. Aged, yes. But real working amps 'in the day' were not just aged, they were tobacco stained; yellow brown, like Uncle Benny's teeth. You all know the look, but FWIW here's my '67 VibroChamp *after* Resolve®, Simple Green, club soda, baking soda, gentle brushing, and sunshine bleaching.

So my thought: Use a really *brown* tea. Yorkshire Gold???

I use coffee to stain my repro tube charts. Do you have some scrap cloth lying around? Nothing like A:B testing!!!

Indeed I do. Yeah I would test before bothering, come up with some halfway thoughtful procedure before moving forward.
