I ordered aged hardware from an online seller with great reviews, and was really disappointed when I opened the package. Its the first time I've ordered aged parts though so im not sure if i was just expecting too much or if im right and it looks like trash.

I was expecting aged but what I got looks more like shiny new after being kicked around a parking lot. 20210122_171904.jpg 20210122_171845.jpg 20210122_171851.jpg 20210122_171826.jpg

I'm sorry to say it, but I think you're right.

Were you able to look at photo examples prior to ordering?
    That does not look appealing.

I'm seriously considering trying if there's nothing I can do to save it easily. The whole package with all of the hardware and Tuners was almost 275 after shipping and tax

That kind of damage can't be reversed. Be sure to send them your pics as well as theirs when requesting the return.

The thing I don't understand is the seller has 100% positive feedback on close to 3000 transactions. That is what made me question whether I was just being picky and post the thread to begin with

Yeah, return the package. Don't take that hit on something you don't like. Seller can just repackage and sell again, I assume. And apparently some people love this look, given the feedback!

If you can't return them, you might be able to even out the finish with 0000 steel wool.

It's looking like eBay is going to let me send them back. I'll probably end up going with the aged Hardware set from stewmac unless there is a better option for the price? Im looking for fake age not fake damage if that makes sense. Parts are for my first build that I would like to resemble a black guard style tele from a couple hundred yds away.

I might buy some cheap parts also and experiment with aging for future builds, I seen a stewmac video a couple of weeks ago using some sort of etching liquid that made it look really simple.

Id also be interested in hearing about low budget hardware options that are still good quality for future builds. I won't get to build many if I throw money at them like I have this one.

    Really!

There is a huge difference between "aged" and "hammered sheet" :)

    edit: I agree you.

I need a few inexpensive aged Telecaster parts myself.
I like what I see from Guitar Fetish.

Has anyone seen or used their reliced parts?

I like the seller’s strategic use of really sh*tty 1990s cell phone pics rather than a resolution that shows his work.

Does it really say 'Fender' on that bridge plate? That's not right.

I think that one of the worst effects yet to come from this "relicing" craze will be pre-mature tuner failure.

Acid is not compatible with the inner workings of a tuner.

Sure, some of the tuner guts might have a little bit of grease on them which may afford some protection, but what about the parts that don't?

And yes, I know I'm in a cynical frame of mind today, but that doesn't have any bearing on reality ;).

Different solutions and varieties of hydrochloric acid or ferric chloride acid may react somewhat slowly with nickel or chrome, but they can really get after pot metal (zinc alloys) and brass alloys.

Before you dunk or fume your tuners, think about what is inside them :).

It's an interesting finish, but doesn't look aged at all. More like it was randomly sanded and then placed in a crown royal bag and run through the dryer.
