After owning it quite awhile, I finally got good sounds out of my EC Vibro Champ

It always sounded honking and harsh. I put a Swart night light Jr on it and that tameed it some. BUt today I did something that I forgot to try. I unplugged the speaker and plugged the amp with the Night light JR into a designated cabinet with an 8 ohm Jensen Special design 8" speaker. I know this speaker sounds fantastic. Had it on low power first, sounded very good, but way less power, more for night playing. I switched to high? YES! everything I wanted from it but it hadn't delivered. I haven't had tons of experince with Weber, but I had heard they don't sound good with Fender. And it is true with the EC. THere is an impedence mismatch that I think the Night light settles. THe difference wetween these soeakers is significant. That Weber does not belong in that amp.

It is good to find some way to use a tool. I will note however that there is no impedance mismatch between that Weber and the OT in the amp. If you have an 8 ohm Jensen 8” speaker, then you do have a mismatch with that speaker.

Do ALL Champs ( tweed, SF/BF) wanna see a 4ohm impedance speaker?( 8", or otherwise...)
or is there a production Fender 8 ohm Champ?
    Just curious.

all vintage champs afaik from the 1940s through 1981 have a 4 ohm speaker. This EC VC calls for a 4 ohm speaker. The Champ 12, which runs a 6L6, calls for an 8 ohm speaker.

Have you tried using the stock speaker and turning both the treble and bass down to one? I do that with my 69 Champ and a Strat, and it sounds awesome.

I'm glad you found the tone you like(!), but it's a combination of the amp, Swart Night Light Jr., that specific Jensen speaker, and different cabinet that adds up to the tone you like.

The Weber in that amp is a Signature 8A, AFAIK. Did you put enough miles on it to break it in? Lots of folks (and Fender) dig those things in Champs when they get loosened up.

It has a volume & vibrato control only.

Let me say this about that. My friend designed the amp for Fender, this or the 57. I was a beta tester for Fender. THe Swart has nothing to do with the tone I am getting from the Jensen casue I can switch it off, ie running it straight to the Jensen. I was hoping it, the night light, matches impedence. I broke the weber speaker in. It is no match for the Jensen.

Interesting, I have had an EC Vibro Champ for several years, and I have always enjoyed the sound. Maybe you got a bad speaker.

Not suppossed to be that serious with low watts, right? I'll just use my weber z-matcher if it is an issue.

I subscribe to the theory that an amp operates at its highest efficiency and safest condition when using a matched load. I also subscribe to the theory that a mismatch to the high side stresses the OT secondary and introduces a higher likelihood of damage from flyback voltage spikes. Ommv.

You could just get a 4ohm Jensen 8" for it

Or even better an 8" 4ohm Eminence 820H which is a great speaker for that vintage tweed vibe.

WEll these Jensen special designs are alnico original, fifty plus years old. I have two and think they both sound exceptional. Like I tild Wally, I can use the Z-matcher.
