Very Cool. You might just try cleaning it up with vinegar first and see what it looks like before painting. My neighbor put out by the curb a 70/80s? chrome lamp with that same black base you have on your second stand there, and I took off the lamp and it makes a great stand. I cleaned the black, cast iron base with white vinegar and it really came alive. (Maybe I'll post a picture tomorrow).

With those two front 'feet' seems like a front leaning mic (on a boom) would never tip forward (knock on wood). Just don't tip it backward!

I much prefer those cast iron bases! You found a nice use for it!

Black wrinkle paint if you go for a subdued look. For a rustic look, strip the rust with a 50% vinegar solution, rinse in hot water and dry immediately, coat with linseed oil and bake at 550F for 5 minutes, then turn off the oven and let it cool. Should end up like a well seasoned skillet!

You could paint it the crinkle gray that was original, it should be quite handsome. I've got some items including a round base from that same era, and the gray tends to yellow so that it has a green hue, which is cool, but not uniform so it shows its age and dirt like a stained white shirt. But yes, that is a really interesting base!

It’s clearly meant to be black, and it looks as though it belongs. Love it.

I love it when the junk drawers come forward with a solution for a project (sometimes after decades of "what's this?")...Mrs usually gives them another year or two at those moments ;).

I also like the idea of sea foam green and chrome.

    Mic stand update.

The mic stand's threaded lower shaft tube will not fit the slightly larger threaded hole in the delta-shaped iron stand base, but it's a close fit, and would work if the smooth hole in the bottom of the mic stand shaft was threaded for a retaining bolt and large washer screwed up into it from the bottom.

So off I went this morning to a local machine shop to have the hole in the lower mic stand shaft tapped and threaded for a 1/2 inch retaining bolt.

So, for $28, it now looks like this...

All that's left to do now is to decide what finish to do the iron base in. It'll probably be primed and 'rattle-canned' some obnoxiously overused retro color.

    Very cool.

I still think the shaft needs a lightning bolt shape on it. :)

So THAT's where those weird desert obelisks of a few weeks ago came from!

Either that, or this is where all Chrysler tail fins went to die.

Or maybe it's the new flag of all Rust Belt cities?

    Bulgaria's space program?

    LOTS of meanings here.

(LOTS of coffee at work as I revise my classes for another trudge toward SUMMER!)

I just happen to have a trio of them. They're about ten or eleven inches long. Chromed steel.

If I wanted to use them for the mic stand project, they're within an arm's reach.
