1DF82925-4A94-4A1E-B1AA-C410668DC8E9.jpeg Napoleon is the sweetest, most loving dog I have ever known. He’s outlived a Pappillion’s typical life span by years and has really slowed to a crawl lately. If I throw his favorite toy(monkey man) he can fetch it once and lays down. I’ve got him on the aging liver kidney diet stuff and he won’t eat it. He won’t even eat his favorite treat (Rotisserie chicken):(. He can’t see or hear very well anymore. Very few teeth left (common w/Pappillions). I’ve been down this road before and I know what’s coming. He’s not in any pain now, but things aren’t fun past this point, and goes pretty quickly. I will not let this little guy suffer at all. When they stop eating, it ain’t long. I just dread what’s coming. Pets are a blessing. This little guy is very special.
    Venting.

My sympathy. I've been through this many times with furry buddies and it never gets easier. I'm glad he's so sweet and loving. You'll have lots of great memories. Take care!

I'm sorry, man. We just lost our Gibby Monster, the smartest funniest dog I ever knew. Yorkie Poodle mix we think, got him from the shelter. He got leptosporosis five years ago, which amazingly he survived, and had been struggling with kidney disease ever since.

He passed away a few weeks ago and every once in a while out of the blue that sickening feeling rolls through me... He's gone. The sadness is immense.

Love to you and your little buddy.

So sorry to hear this, man.
One of my brothers and his wife just had to put down one of their two Papillons. They've had both of them several years, and they were the smartest, most intuitive dogs you could find. Very energetic, but trained to commands to control them. I think their's decline was pretty quick....I didn't know anything was wrong until it was all over. Apparently, the other papillon took it harder than the humans, he's a bit confused as to where Ike is.
Best wishes for Napoleon and your family. :(

So sorry to hear about your friend going downhill. You're so right about pets being a blessing. Our dogs have always been like family to us. A few years ago Mr. Wolf got a huge tumor and had to be put down. That was a tough day.

She wrote this to say goodbye to her college class but I've co-opted it to say goodbye to all dogs.

Because I too spend my time in dog years.

@4pickupguy - your doggo outlived his other classmates because he knew it was the best gig in town.
    Sorry you're saying goodbye.
    Peace - Deeve

Thanks folks. Those of you who have been down this road will know what I mean when I say, they tell you when it’s time because can see a certain ‘hollowness’ in they’re eyes. Last time I did not heed this to the detriment of my cat. Not again.
He’s actually been up and around the house since I posted this. Just asked me to let him out to go pee. One day at a time, we are in no hurry! I’m convinced he still blogs on my iPad when I’m not looking...

Sorry man. What a relationship we have with our dogs. It's amazing, they are just fur covered love for sure.

Tufnell and I send our love to you and your hound. They wrap their little paws round your heart and give you the best days... and the worst day. Remember the love you shared.

I got a (strong) feeling that he senses your anguish and wants to cheer you up. It's been demonstrated time-and-time again that their is unique bonding between animals and their owners; specifically with dogs. Enjoy what time is left and always keep the memories alive (I lost my first dog in 1954 when he didn't return home after following me to school and, from time to time, I relive that day along with the more happier ones we had together).

The Hurt will heal with time but the memories will last a life time.

I've been through this several times myself and it does not get easier. Take it one day at a time and treasure the moments.
