El Jimador is about half the price of patron and imo a pretty good quality tequila.
Consider the El Jimador Reposado Tequila. It's a step up in quality and not much more expensive than the Silver.

In general, from low quality to high, think Silver, Reposado, Anejo, Extra Anejo.

Think of it this way: In your Margarita, shots, sipping, sipping with your favorite person.

Personally, when I make margaritas, I use Reposado.

Cazadores. It’s better than significantly more expensive stuff. Good to mix or shoot.
Also widely available in Canadian liquor stores
I remembered having Cazadores at this epic party and being impressed enough that I snapped a pic. Checked and it was actually Corralejo Anejo. Also around $40 a fifth and pretty good as I remember it. They do a reposado that's about $10 cheaper, but I haven't had it.

Anyway, maybe another option.

If he likes Patron, Buy him the Kirkland brand at Costco, Many believe it's just re-branded Patron, And even if it's not... Most can't taste the difference in a blind taste test... Same goes for Kirkland Vodka... It's basically Gray Goose, at less than half the price.

Don Julio 1942 is my favorite, But it's spendy.

Patron like most come in more than one ages. Anejo is aged longer than silver or clear and is amber. Anejo Patron is more expensive than Avion anejo but is about the same. Cabo Wabo anejo is less expensive too and that is what I have currently. If taking shots I prefer anejo. In mixes silver is good

OPs friend might drink lots of tequila but he doesn’t know anything about it if he goes for Patron Silver.

Cheaper - Esolon

Similar cost to Patron - Corzo, Tezon, Don Julio

Silver tequila is a pretty boring taste; spring for anejo or reposado if available.

In Mexico in the 90s and early 2000's, they used to talk about Don Julio. When in Rome...

Sombrero Negro used to be my favorite tequila but it's hard or impossible to find on this side of the border.
