I’ve always been a fan of vintage spec gear.
However, modern stuff is growing on me. I find there’s lots of perks in going modern. But the vintage is just so cool!

for example, something that brings nothing to the guitar besides aesthetics. Which of these do you prefer?

I like the flat top knobs, ashtray bridge plate, ash body, black pickguard.

None of it is a deal breaker though.

All I can say is “a matched pair”. Unlike waaaay too many of my instruments.

Your 'modern' knob is essentially unchanged from 1960. The AV64 knobs look exactly like those.

I make the distinction because I, too, tend to like vintage spec when it comes to guitars. Both playability and aesthetics. And I happen to prefer early 60s Fender over early 50s. Slab board necks, 'clay' dots... and fine knurl flat top knobs...

These days I find myself leaning towards 'old' in almost everything. Just my age I guess.

I like the 60s onwards knobs. To me Teles are flat guitars with rounded sides. The later knobs match the control plate, body, pickups, pickguard, etc in that extruded sort of look.

Nocaster knob from Rutters - not too domed, not too flat, imho just perfect!

I don't think either look particularly modern to be honest and both styles existed before I was born. :p

Flat tops always. Sometimes not even knurled. I don't do a lot of volume rolls.

@Amby nailed it - something right between the two. Mine has flat tops - I never really thought much about it. For that matter, every time there is a post about switch tips I have to look to remember which I have. I guess some of those details are just not as important to me.

The taller flat top with a heavy knurl would be my ideal.
