Any tips on the picking pattern during the verse? I can get close with a pick but I feel like something is missing. The YouTube lessons/covers I saw were disappointing, mostly someone strumming an acoustic. Maybe he's doing a roll with his fingers?

What a cool story to be the guy who showed Ernie Ball lighter strings.

James makes very difficult licks look really easy.
    They're not easy.

Burton is super cool and was the 'man' on so many songs and hits... it is his roll on the song you posted...

He played on the original Suzy Q, joined Ricky Nelson's band, and then led the TCB Band. That's quite a run!

You aren't kidding, I've been working on hybrid picking (mystery train) for almost a year!

I play it with a combination of a muted downward rake through the chord (low to high) followed by individually picked muted notes (high to low) - all done with the pick.

Okay, I kept listening to the verse...but the lick you are talking about is in the chorus, right? The song begins with the chorus, and that lick is a big part of that chorus....behind “you look like an angel...walk like an angel...talk like an angel...but I got wise”, correct?

I don't hear any fingerstyle in that lick either....it's just raking with the pick according to what I'm hearing.

Exactly what i thought. I stopped the video. He is disgusting, being so humble. But he wears cool shirts.
