Advice/Information needed - Pink Tele

Don't laugh, but I've always had a thing for those pink paisley Tele's.

Fender RI'd these thing a while back for a little bit, and they (apparently) were made in Japan. Price on this one is $595 with a semi-beat up tweed case, and I would like to hear any comments on MIJ Tele's in general, and possibly this guitar in specific.

Here's another option - Someone offered me a 'like new' MW Tele with HSC for $435 shipped. I've heard that the Muddy Teles have some weirdness with their factory set-ups. Specifically, nits cut a little high to facilitate slide players.

Not sure which direction to go, and thanks for any assistance!

E-Man..Where you Been ????....I'm a pretty Big fan of most MIJs in General, but have never had a Paisley in the Shop....but that seems maybe a tad high on price....the Muddys have an Ash Body...and the Goofy 9-hole pickguard...but seems like the better Money deal....have you played either one ?...or are they a long distance purchase ?....don't be a Stranger...Tony in Maryland

1. I love those Paisleys, and the price is about right. Not a bargain, but not a bad deal either.

2. The MW teles ROCK. That's a darn good price if it does include the case and the shipping. I loved mine. I'd jump all over it at $435 if I weren't looking at unloading guitars myself.

Hey Tony! ... I haven't gone anywhere...just lurk alot. Haven't bought a new Tele in quite a while, and am just GAS'in' lately.

Both the guitars are long distance, and I tend to agree about the $595 price being a little high. The fellow with the MW is a tad on the flaky side as well..it was an ebay auction gone bad, and he's polling bidders for off-line purchase. A little nervous about that.

The paisley RI is on ebay as well. If there's no bids (there usually isn't on these), I may see if I can get him to get more reasonable about it. Really just curious about the MIJ Fender quality, etc.

I got a brand new,CIJ '68 re-issue Pink Paisley about 3 years ago,swapped it with a local music shop for my Epiphone Les paul custom
I had tried a few different Fender tele's at the time & it came out tops for playability & sound for me, build & finish quality is good & even my wife likes it so she allows it to live in our front room as a piece of MOJO art

Forgot to say It was Brand New, Old Stock, it was in his shop for a long time thats probably why I got a good deal on it

A buddy of mine has the pink MIJ tele andthe strat he absolutely loves them both. His only complaint is that the pickguard and paint are now different colors. The paint is turning the original silver in the paisely gold while the pickguard hasn't faded! But it seems, that's what they all do...

I had a mid 90's MIJ Photflame strat that is a fantastic guitar. I sold it last year to the other guitarist in the band. The build quality was excellent! The tone was fantastic and it had a super fast rosewood neck on it.

I can't say as I've seen a bad MIJ fender yet.

Someday maybe I'll own one of those flame top three pickup CIJ Tele's...

I think they were around the £400 to £500 new over here in the UK, & they are now selling about the same money for used ones

A rough rule of thumb is $1 USD = £1 GBP meaning that if it costs you $500 USD it costs us £500 GBP

I would go for it at $595 as that equates to around £300 which is a lot cheaper than a new MIM Standard Tele

We tend to get screwed a little on prices over here, I got a good quality Fret file from the USA for $32.50 (£16.50) including postage, a UK specialist wanted nearly £40 + postage for the exact same branded item

Ok Paulprobuild, You lost me there. If 1 USD = £1 GBP and $500=£500, then why doesn't $595.00 =£ 595 ?

E-Man...Back to your MIJ question....I've done mods and set-ups on quite a few, and the fit & finish are excellent...the only weak point I see are the Asian pots and switch...which a gentleman w/ your Electronic backround, would be no problem...(how's that fer Kissin up !)

Sorry if it is a little confusing

The $1 = £1 is approximatly what we pay for stuff that is imported into the UK after import duties & taxes have been paid, therefore if it costs you $500 it will cost us around £500 after duty & tax & UK retailers profit

The $595 for the guitar works out at £300 using the true current exchange rate of £1 GBP = $1.95 USD

But if I bought that guitar for $595 after it had been imported into the UK we would have to pay duties on that value of $595

If a supplier bought goods in the USA to sell them in the UK, after duties paid & profit they would be charging us in £GBP the same amount as they have paid in $USD thats where the £1 = $1 comes from, it is just a rule of thumb that we here in the UK use if we have a UK supplier selling us goods bought in the USA

Here's something else. It appears that these pink units were RI's at least twice, and the guitars aren't the same...depending on which RI you may have. Some of them (I believe the older ones ( 80's ) have 3 bolt necks, and the later versions have a 4 bolt neck, as well as an additional string tree....

What I have done is contact the Fender Japan folks (Ishibashi?), to see what kind of inventory they might have..or the prospect of ordering one, and obviously, the cost(s) involved.

I also agree about the Japan issue electronics (pots, jacks, switches)...certainly not the most robust, but easily replaceable.

Will let you folks know what transpires.

Mid 80's MIJ Paisley Teles are 4 bolt too. There were only 3 bolt Thinlines and Customs back then. The newer reissues are not held in as high regard as the 80's MIJ's either.
