A few weeks ago, someone put up a post with a video; I was curious, so I clicked the video since I have special permission at work to go to YouTube for training videos. The video was a young woman playing a Tele. Nice video, nothing inappropriate, no big deal.

    However!

Since that point, the ads that load on the TDPRI have been from places like Los Angeles Apparel - 20-somethings in skimpy outfits. Not stuff I need to see, least of all on my work machine where everything that loads is tracked. These models are my daughter's age, and I would not be happy if she dressed like that, which she does not. We cannot put an ad blocker on our work machines. Sigh.

So, I dumped my cache. No change. I spent some time surfing The Tire Rack and Sweetwater. No change.

    Grrr.

So I decided to start clicking the "Ad Choice" button and rating ads. I kept marking these as "Ad was not appropriate"; when that choice was not offered, I would mark "Seen this ad multiple times". It started to work.

After a few days, I was still getting skimpy clothing ads - and often, the same ad four times on the page. Keep rating, keep marking. Vigilance.

I am happy to say now that my ads are either no longer clothes related, or only one here and there. Lots of them are just blocked or don't show because the work proxy does not allow them through. Nice. (I did have to rate a clothing ad when I was posting this.)

This process has spanned about 10 days or so, but it is finally paying off. It slays me that all these Google ads started from just watching one video. Who knew they would turn on the fire hose.

How about a HOSTS file? That's my solution for Windows and Linux PCs.

The only way you can be sure to make the ads stop is to buy some of the skimpy apparel. You're welcome.

Our machines are locked down tight. I don't even have that access. We design infrastructure, but cannot set up our own machines.

    That's too bad.

I've got enough access level to put updated adware and malware hosts file on our shop floor systems. I made a good case for doing this since it can prevent situations like you describe or worse ones where someone hits ugly stuff like redirects and browser hijackers. Ideally, they should only be accessing authorized internal and external systems but people are people.

Of course, I use my personal phone to access TDPRI when I'm in the office.

Won't an ad blocking app do the job? I'm looking around for a good one at the moment.

Use Firefox browser and add 'Ublock Origin' plugin. There is one for Chrome browser too, but Google is not too happy about that one.

Sometimes choosing the "new private window" from the Firefox menu is useful.

Youtube without 'UO' is mad with ads.

One time at school a female colleague became plagued with e-mails offering porn links: not a good situation for a teacher.

Longboring story that I don't know all about anyway, but later the night custodian was caught after watching porn on another teacher's computer.

Don't forget to log off, or at least lock your screen, when you leave your desk!

I use one at home - UBlock Origin. On my work machine, we are not allowed and I don't have privileges to add one anyhow.

I've learned to -never- do any kind of web surfing with company provided computers. They track everything.

Best to just keep your own little notebook and use the wifi on your phone when taking little surfing breaks while at work.

Are you rehearsing for when you get called on the carpet? :D It's okay if you like to look at women's underwear, 'er I mean swimsuits. Was the gal playing the Tele wearing her underwear? Oooops I mean swimsuit? Were you wearing a swimsuit, or your underwear? Uh never mind, this is getting kind of complicated. Why didn't you just look at Hank Jr. on YouTube mooning his audience? It would have been easier to explain!!:lol:

I run Firefox and MalwareBytes and I never see ads on TDPRI. I know this isn't helpful, since you're talking about a work laptop that requires admin privileges to change/updates settings.

Hmmm...I was just noticing ads as I'm on TDPRI for Silver Canyon boots and hats. I wanted to follow the link/click on the ad, and I can't possibly think how that might get twisted, but since reading the OP, now I'm hesitant to click on anything. :(

Actually, that won’t work. Most of the ads the algorithms feed me are for things I just bought.
