Why do members use odd sounding names rather than their locations?

Hmmm .... South Australia is almost a million square Km's, so is not really precise.

Although ... my descriptor is even less so.

I don’t know, I thought mine was just a cute way to say my states name

P.S “Land of Mary” = Maryland

Six String Slinger your response is why I asked about a dislike button or a thumbs down. I can't tolerate BS.

kbold - I live in Adelaide , South Australia, the state's capital city. Population only about 1.2 million.
Also, South Australia is millions of square miles, about the size of Texas.

Just because it's not what you want doesn't make it BS.

People have plenty of reasons for not giving an accurate location. Some are just paranoid. Some may have some genuine concern (though I don't know what that may be). Some may just not want to share, which is perfectly legitimate and requires no explanation. Some just want to be cheeky about it like we are with our handles. I suppose I'm mostly in that last camp (my guitar playing bears remarkably little resemblance to gunslinging), along with the fact that, on most of my posts here, my location doesn't mean a damned thing. It's irrelevant 99% of the time.

That said, I haven't been shy about my location on threads/posts where it's been relevant. I'm in Miami, Florida. Not one of the parts you might think of when you hear "Miami" (I don't see any beaches, Art Deco or Miami Vice tropes unless I particularly want to), but Miami nonetheless. It's probably more accurate to say a suburb of Miami, but there's a tendency here to call most anything within Miami-Dade county "Miami". I think it's partially due to all the different parts of the county pretty much bleeding into each other, as opposed other places where there's a lot of "empty" space between highway exits to this or that town or neighborhood. I can get from most parts of the county to most other parts without leaving the surface streets.

It's neat to know we have members from all over, and even. little heart-warming to know some of them are relatively close to where I am; I may even have bought/sold a guitar from/to one before, or passed them at Publix without our having any notion of each other's six-string slinging tendencies. But for the most part I'm not too concerned about where people from the internet are from. For me, part of the point is that it doesn't matter. That's how come we're all here.

Because "245 Dixon Rd, Etobicoke, ON M9P 2M4, just down from the Esso station" doesn't have the same ring.

I have first cousins and people I knew from high school that I don't want to give away my location.

If I couldn’t tolerate BS, I’d have to move elsewhere.
Newcomers to Texas should be outfitted with hip waders.

brookdalebill - just hot home from playing guitar with my best mate ( and a beer or two). His son worked in Austin Texas ( currently NY) I didn't think, from what I've heard that Austin was full of ......
in fact the son, an accomplished guitarist/singer and songwriter had only good things to say about Austin. Dallas got to him though and most people only talked to him to hear his Aussie accent - he felt like Crocodile Dundee- love your accent but...

Yes, bigger than Texas, but it's not millions of sq miles.
From the great Wiki: South Australia ....... a total land area of 983,482 square kilometres (379,725 sq mi)
Even WA doesn't make it into the millions of square miles .... close but not quite.
