I read this article and my initial gut reaction was "absolutely not"! I have a hard time with the idea of going back and digitally introducing product placement in movies from days gone by. Obviously, I'm used to it in today's shows/movies/video games. There is mention of musicians being able to use it to add placements to their past music videos to create another income stream. I don't hate that idea...

I need a much bigger font for my “NO” than this forum offers. You want advertising? Buy it, or get a current film to offer it.

First King Kong movie had a clearly visible Pepsodent sign in the background early in the movie. Earliest product placement that I clearly remember. It may not have been intentional but it was very noticeable.

Should not be allowed to alter original movies. They are what they are when they were made, good or bad. Corporate greed should have boundaries.

Well if their aim is to get me to:

    1. Not buy the advertised product
    2. Stop watching movies altogether

Then I say let them have at.

Product placement has never moved my to buy a product

Gary Player’s son was banned for doing that at the Masters. Good for them for banning him. He’s played tricks before and has no place at the Masters, IMHO.

I’ve never clicked on an ad or will ever buy a product from the crap presented here.

No way - especially if it's in b&w - leave the art alone.

Most people, including us here, don't understand the value of product placement or advertising in general.
It's NOT to make you run out and buy something.....it's to "enter" a name or product into your subconscious mind, so that the next time you're in a store or buying situation you will probably select that item if available. And, don't say it doesn't work on you.....it DOES. Advertising is the most powerful method of manipulation ever devised by man.
And, "retroactive" product placement is just another form of that manipulation......and it is absolutely futile to try and resist. NOTHING you see or experience
anymore can be trusted or even verified. Who are you going to complain to? You are "owned"......whether you submit or not. ;)

I am not sure how the owners can be stopped from doing this, but it serves no productive purpose. The owners want to increase the value of what they have, but it won't increase the number of old movies produced (too late for that). Here in Dallas at some point 15 years ago, owners of skyscrapers decided to offer tenants the option of paying a bunch of money to have their logo hung on the outside of the building. It's a one-time increase in the value of the building, but now they all look ridiculous.

    agree but...

in my case you're talking to a guy who will generally buy the in house brand of anything to save a nickel or dime.

in general i think it works, but just looking at me or my sister...we're young, broke, and know how to use the internet. in similar situations where we're hunting for the cheapest option, i see people like my parents or people their age just hemorrhage money by buying the first thing that's in front of them that they recognize - they’re in a position to act automatically.

Do these brands believe that we have no idea they exist? How many more times and ways do we need to be reminded of their existence? I just don’t get it.

It is subliminal manipulation of your brain if you don't recognize it.If you do you know what to do... I hope...
