I ordered a regular pickguard, but I'm going to have to cut it around the f-hole. I didn't want to go with cabronita style or the warmoth f-hole style, because I want it to go all the way around the neck pocket and all the way around the bridge.

I made paper models with a couple of ideas to see how they look on the body. The one on the right is based on a picture I saw somewhere. For the one on the left, I tried to keep in the spirit of the original shape. Any opinions, or other shapes to consider? The other option is to go without a pickguard, but the body is already routed for a full size humbucker in the neck, so if I end up putting a single coil in there, and not a humbucker or P90, then I think that I'll need a pickguard.

i like you idea on the right and really dislike the cabronita style. mine has a flame top so I prefer no pickguard.

I like the one on the right but maybe adjust the point near the mid-section of the f-hole by the bridge.

There's one in the gallery here, can't find it now, but it retains the standard Tele pickguard outline just removing the bits that overhang the f-hole. It looks great. I thought I had saved the picture but I can't find it.

I like the one on the right. I'd adjust the contour to follow the curve of the outside edge of the f hole. I'd go one ply white or antique white with a maple neck or get the pick guard in an antique white to match the clay dots in a rosewood neck. What a cool idea.

Right looks ok, I think that left lower tail end flares to much though. maybe match it parallel with the F hole side? or just round it?

I cut down a standard Tele pickguard into a semi-Tuff Dog but left the lower horn intact

To be kind, I'll just encourage you to find one of your friends that displays an acute sense of the esthetic .. then ask them what they feel you may want to do..

I did my first one like this, and cut down an existing standard pickguard. If I was to do that again I would use the treatment Mike Simpson posted for the lower horn portion - I like that much more than how I did this one.

But I intend to replace the pickguard on this one with this attached pattern, which, if you are starting from scratch I would suggest to you versus cutting down an existing pickguard.
    Cheers,
    Rex

Rex, that's very classy! Do you have a template for it? Or would you mind posting a "top view" so I can try to trace it?

Heck, you can have it if you want. Like I said, I plan to build a new one to replace it, using the template I posted. Problem is I work slow as heck so not sure when I'll get to it. I'll take a pic now...

    Funny,
Having you say you like this makes me like it better. I thought I was more independent than that...

Most pickin' action is downward, below the strings, ala' most Gibson pickguards, etc..
