so i needed to kill some time...i went into a Guitar Center. picked up and twiddeled on this and that. and there hung this sweet black gretsch. single cut, with a bigsby. priced about, i don't remember, around 650, maybe. i think it had a ebony fretboard. humbucker pick ups. it looked like Rock and Roll on a stick personified.

Sweet! Hell, yes!

you know what i like? none of my main hero's ever played one. not jimi, not duane, not clapton etc. Rory had a gretsch corvette but it was nothing like this one.

i gots the funds...should i step so far out of orthodoxy? i liked it a lot. one thing that was really cool was that the "made in korea" or wherever didn't mean a damn thing - it was fine, oh, fine - as good an electric guitar as you could want. i have been through many guitars over many years and i know poop from shinola and there was nothing lacking about this guitar!

tell me to go in there tomorrow and buy it. dare me.

It’s rare that you find a guitar you react viscerally to. I assume that MIK for $650 is a used guitar price. The fretboard may very well be ebony. If it is, you’ve found something special. I have a MIJ Annie. It’s unique. It definitely has an ebony board. And I’d never sell or trade it. There’s something about a Gretsch and if you’ve found one you like, jump on it. It won’t be there long.

i went and researched - it's a G5230T electromatic Jet w/Bigsby. the fretboard is ?black walnut? Never heard of that, but yeah, that'll work. $646.99

i think it will probably be here in residence at the Thunderbyrd estate this time tomorrow. i think it is a rock and roll guitar.

the only gretsch i've spent any time with is a Corvette i rented for a couple of months. it was sweet, it was really easy to play and sounded decent. the problem is that it was really poorly made. the input jack was crap and fell apart constantly. i remember that the bigsby stayed in tune fairly well, but everything else wanted to fall to pieces.

the one i played today seemed very solid.

If you find a Gretsch that feels good and is hassle free DO IT! You won't regret it. Much like ES 335's, each unit is so different from one another. So when you stumble across the "one"...just get it.
