Attached is a short clip: first clean (on a tweed amp, edge of breakup), then DS-1 "A", then DS-1 "B". One of the two DS-1s has been modded, but I won't say which is which until a number of people have chimed in.

Knobs on both pedals are set identical as follows (not as pictured):

    Tone - 2 pm
    Level - 11 am
    Dist - Dimed

Curious which sound you prefer, keeping in mind the pedals are set exactly the same.

Edit: Just a note, there is no post processing done on this except normalizing the audio before bouncing to an mp3.

    It's a tough call.

In isolation, I prefer "B". It has more guts, is smoother, and has less of that fizziness to it. It also sounds slightly less distorted overall which I think I also like.
On the other hand, "A" has more presence and cut to it that would probably fight through a band mix a bit better.

Is this the amp/settings that you usually use? That can be REALLY important.

Yeah, that is how I usually run the amp, and then push it over the edge with a pedal or two. The delay is the Belle Epoche Deluxe in the amp's effects loop.

I normally don't use a DS-1, but have been experimenting with it lately in an effort to learn how to use Boss pedals I don't typically like. I am surprised how well it actually records, which is only a bit different from how it sounds out front, although the recording is pretty accurate to what I am hearing in the room (captured through a Two Notes Captor X using California Tweed IR -> Logic Pro X)

Are they both 40th anniversary ds1? That’s the only black one I’ve seen.

    I think I like A just a touch more. B has a nice definition though. B sounds a bit like a rat?

This is a great "DS-1". Essentially a clone of the Keeley-modded version.

I have The one on the right it is a special edition “reverse” model, with the letters orange and a black casing

I think they came out a little before the 40th model

Oh right. I’m guessing they didn’t come out in australia. They look fantastic.

#2 has a fuller, warmer sound. #1 is just too fizzy/buzzy for me.

Interesting observation. I had only listened to it through a good set of cans and studio monitors - the difference is pretty apparent. I guess while there is a difference, the difference is not significant enough to hear in a phone.

Why not try reducing that distortion?
Bet either one could be dialed in to give a usable sound, but the way you have them set is not fair to the poor pedals.

Is this another sedative thread? If I had a TV, I'd be looking for a golf channel.

I think I have a new pet peeve.

I think B ( at the end of the clip) sounded better.
Fuller, and fat ( but still articulate)

sample A sounded thinner and fizzy

    * would like to hear both with distortion backed off, but that's maybe just my taste, and not what a DS-1 is made for: hard-rocking, modern distortion

I never "dime" the distortion on my DS-1! That said, I think I like B better but it's mainly a tone thing. Just because the controls were set the same doesn't mean the output was the same. Setting them to sound identical would likely be possible.

B gets my vote. Fatter to my ears. A sounds hollow by comparison. If I had to guess I would say that the larger thumb screw is causing the tone thickening in the second clip. ;)

    Both are good useable sounds.

    I prefer A.

B is too smooth and refined for me.

A is Plexi. B is Mesa.

    What do I win?

A is thinner, B is fuller, but I don't like either, lol. The tone before you turn them on is the best. But, they'd both probably sound a lot better if you didn't turn the distortion all the way up, especially since your amp is already getting a dirty tone.
