    How about this:

    A 2x4 guitar building challenge?

Use as MANY or AS FEW 2x4' in one's challenge build. The neck and the body have to be made of entirely 2x4's plus a fretboard of the wood of one's choice. Have to slot your own fretboard. Guitar may or may not have a finish.

Pickups and hardware can be made or bought as one's budget and or skill allows.

Judging should be communally done and by people who complete their builds only. Limit the categories and expand the placings so that many people "win"

    Hopefully these suggestions are helpful.

People really want a challenge and I suspect the above will limit the bickering in previous years and help people remember it isn't about the winning. It's about the: camaraderie, fellowship, kindness. and knowledge sharing this forum is known for.

Time controls bring out the best and worst in people. That isn't bad. It just shows people what they have to work on. Life isn't about the finishing. It's about how one runs.

If we do have a challenge and I enter and do not complete it, I shall give $200.00 to a local charity: Arizona Basset Hound Rescue, 501c3.

That sounds like a great idea. I was not around yet when the last challenges went down, but reading through the archive I learned so much about building guitars! It would be a shame if there wouldn't be any more competitons.

    Best regards

It's not a bad idea opening it up for discussion again. I loved all the challenges and participated in just about all of the official ones. While the 2 x4 challenge in the woodworking forums could be interesting, I'd suggest it be a 2 x4 of any timber. All the SPF 2 x4's I've ever seen at Lowes and Home depot are pretty nasty , grain -wise, and they aren't dry yet.

Sounds like it's time to pick out a few decent ones and get 'em stickered to cure.;)

Also, I bet those piles of old dried out 2x4's folks on Craigslist just want you to come by and haul off for them would start looking a lot better...
Which makes me suggest another idea that the guitar has to be built of wood you salvaged from somewhere for free - no money allowed to be spent on the wood. Working on my IraqiCasters today has me thinking about this. Like having had about enough of salvaged wood for a while...LOL.

That would be interesting, and I would most likely participate in something like it...

I'd be into this. Got a few pine 2 x 4's I retrieved out of a dumpster bin a few months or so back. That qualifies two categories. Not sure about the neck though. Does a 2 1/2 x 1 1/2 qualify? :p

Great Idea, both of them. 2x4 o-caster or a salvage caster challenge...
I suspect my kiddo's are still too young for me to be able to participate but if I'd be tempted to try anyways even if I knew I wasn't going to finish on time....

I don’t want a guitar built out of spruce, so I’d prolly be out.

I could buy some alder and maple and cut it into 2x4 chunks before gluing it back together I guess...
