I have an unabashed love for old guitars that have been used, abused (in some cases), modded, tossed aside, or otherwise deemed unworthy of most of the typical vintage purist's interests.
Here is an extreme mutt that I recently acquired:

From what I was told it could be an early 50's neck and perhaps body as well. Refinished more than once, no pencil dates left, tummy and forearm contours, pots date from '52, bridge pickup is an old Champion lapsteel pickup with a baseplate, old (late-50's) toploader bridge... Like I said, its a real mutt. Keep in mind that I cannot, beyond a shadow of a doubt verfity the authenticity of the neck and body, but they do exhibit some of the signs of an old blakguard (the 12th fret dots are the early-50's narrow width).
It plays and sounds excellent and is a nice contrast to my '66 Tele:

All in all I'm happy with what I've got considering that I don't have much $$$ into it.
Thanks for looking, and have a nice day!

Even a "mutt " like that has a certain charm to it , in the end it boils down to how it feels and how it sounds . A Tele with that much mileage on it has stories to tell , enjoy your mutt and let the purists do their thing . It still has cool factor ! Z54

There some clues to find in the wood to check if it can be an old blackguard. D stamped in neck cavity and/or neck base? If there's any, it's a very good sign for early blackguard, if not, it's not a clue against it as they're found on most of them, but not all of them. As opposed to old nail holes under the pickguard, they have to be there : close to the neck pickup cavity on the left, one in the horn area. Even after several refin, they still should show up. If you can't find any trace of them, that's not good. On the back of the body, there should be two dowel holes and you should measure them, the blackguard book shows that early ones are larger than later ones, till 53…

    Dowel and nail holes pics

The dowel hole size (bigger 53 and before), smaller, ever after.

A nail hole on a 51 Telecaster refinished several times.

I like the mutt and the fact that it is a mutt with stories to tell. To me those are worth more than all of the pristine vintage guitars that sat under beds and in closets combined.

Yes, I bought it from a guy in the UK. It came with a gnarly old Selmer croc-skin case too:
