A question for central Massachusetts drivers

I got back from driving on the Mass Pike a few days ago. It was round trip, going one exit, from I-290 in Worcester to I-84 in Sturbridge and back again.

As you probably know, the toll booths are gone and scanners now read license plates and send bills.

Mine came today, from Enterprise Car Rentals: almost $20 for tolls plus service fee for the pleasure of weathering maybe ten miles each way on the Pike.

So I'll do some map reading, of course, to figure another way to get from 290 to 84 and save $20 next time.

But I figure it's also worth asking the wise minds here at TDPRI: Do you have a favorite alternate route I should try?

Not from there but if you use waze there is a setting to avoid toll roads.

I did not know about the scanners, left that part of the country years ago.Sorry I can't help.Sounds like literal Highway Robbery!

Route 20 (Boston Post Road) is essentially parallel to the Pike, much more picturesque if you have the time.

If you drive it on your own EZ Pass tag it wouldn't cost anywhere near $20.
