or a night at Iowa's 'Dragstrip Of Dreams'. Get it ( like Field Of Dreams)?

I went to the drag races right outside of Onawa, Iowa tonight for the first time. It was a pretty cool thing to do on a warm summer night. Pretty cheap too as it only cost 10 bucks. They had bleachers on the east and west side of the strip. I sat on the west side so I could get video of the races.

There were several females racing against men which surprised me. I was also surprised to see motorcycles racing against dragsters. A lot of cool Camaros were there. I was also amazed to see vehicles I didn't think could compete in drag races like Chevy S-10s. If you watch my video which I'll put up later on YouTube you'll see. I'll post a short vid here later.

    Anything goes.
I've seen snowmobiles with roller skate style wheels on the front runners drag racing at local tracks.
    Occasional quads, go-carts, anything.

However.... As of yet, not a single Camaro, ever......

I haven't been in years but it sure is a fun time. Lots of good memories and the best one, being able to race down the track in your own car. Win or lose, good times.

I haven’t been yet, I have no excuses as our local track is/used to be well known on the drag circuit

Maybe someday, sounds like good fun

Most of my drag racing was at events that were free to the public ... typically no concession stands or bleachers though. IMG_2988.JPG

Driving fast in a straight line is not easy ...

Circle track on dirt is more difficult...

    Jus sayin ...

    My home track ...

I'm pretty sure that was a girl in the video pic. She was doing a nasty burnout just before that pic was taken.

How do the cars operate? It's 1/4 mile so do they do any shifting or is it one gear or what? They go so fast it's unbelievable. I love the noise too!

One of the Camaros did a wheelie part way up the strip and I think he won.

Its harder to hear them shift when they race together, but in your clip- the first car, (a Mustang) you can clearly hear it is a common three speed automatic, (though manually shifted)
What you were watching is handicap/bracket racing, which in part relies on being able to consistently run a predicted time. Because of this, stick shifts are less commonly used, though some do. I have bracket raced a few stick cars. Personal preference at the time......
My old Mustang is set up for "street and strip" with rear end gears selected to allow it to be almost at redline in fourth gear at the quarter mile mark.

And FWIW, many faster sportsman races are now running 1/8th mile for reasons of safety/liability and space constraints. Even pro racing has shortened up to 1000 feet.

I kind of dig the pro drag radial tire classes myself. Those guys are nuts!
Very basic outline of the class is- build as much power as you want, you are limited to this 10.5 inch wide radial tire.....

And you get 1/4 mile runs like this:

    Or 1/8 mile runs like:

And since you have stones of steel, cruise out for a burger and soda:

Blast. I thought this thread was a misprint for a discussion on either of these two fine albums!

Haaa, typically if you pull a wheelie, you have lost the race, but in this instance, it is called "bracket racing". The Camero is a way faster vehicle than the truck. Note that the Camero put on the breaks before the finish line to avoid breaking out of his bracket. Bracket racing is an odd type of drag racing that became popular in the 70s for weekend warriors. It basically has nothing to do with performance, but mainly to do with consistency. Lower performance racers are typically more consistent and win more often.

Where's all the spectators at the Onawa Dragstrip? It looks like a beautiful night and the bleachers are empty. The good Dragstrips closed years ago around here. A 1/8 mile track is all that's left, and it's not worth the 1.5 hr. drive there.

    Racing to me was everything.
    Horses, Cars, Mudders.

That “Ford Versus Ferrari” woke up a lot of long dormant things in me, that fellow that played Ken Myles really freaked me out - it was like he was Ken Myles.

Last time I went to N.E.Dragway it was for the Funny Cars.

...wanna see & hear something really nice?
