I don't know much about Rory Gallagher ( late to the party),
but he had it all when it came to his craft- fantastic blues playing, tone with a great bite, his voice, and energy, and a great band that hung right with him. Great frontman, seemed very humble/likeable.

I have the '74 Irish Tour CD, which just cooks!

Here is a fun song ( from Old Grey Whistle Test):

One of my favorites, but somehow I missed him in the 70's.

I was immediately blown away by him from the first time I heard his records in the 70's

from the account of their meeting that i've read, the stones did not show him the respect he deserved. jagger dithered and keith was apparently too stoned to talk to rory.

With me, I seemed to always read about how good Rory was in the Guitar magazines ( I read a ton in the '80's-'90's while learning to play, blues/R&R), but never got around to actually listening to him, 'till the late '90's.
When I finally heard him, it was unbelievable how talented he was!

    I remember thinking:

" Why isn't this guy ( in the US) huge?!"
He was a 'player's player' for sure, but IMO should or could gave had much broader Rock appeal in the US- it just never happened.

He was really big in Greece when I was growing up in the 80s. Sadly, he was only famous for Moonchild and Shadow Play, and neither was/is to my liking. A bit too hard rock for me.
Then, I discovered his late 60s and 70s stuff... Wow! Late to the party but I'm glad I got there.

I have a few of his CDs and they are fantastic, but one I've got is Rory playing with the surviving members of the yardbirds as a guest guitarist and the other guest player is Jeff beck such a cool album from a band called BOX OF FROGS

Although a true story can anyone really imagine Rory as a Stone, considering how they treated Mick Taylor in regards to writing credits etc as well as both Mick and Keith risking being upstaged by Rory's theatrics?.

beyond the internal politics, it would have been a fantatic pairing and if it took off would have lead the stones into a new direction but i could see the ego clash from here.

Like some of you I missed him in the '70s, even though I had a couple of his albums when they came out... I just tossed them in the pile with all of the others.

But, about a year ago I started listening more closely to his live stuff, and i'm kicking myself for not paying more attention to him back then. What was I thinking? Rory is amazing!

i first knew about Rory when i saw him on the Don Kirshner's Rock Concert tv show in either 73 or 74. i thought he was great, but out here in the hinterlands, i don't think i ever saw one of his records for sale. and he wasn't on the radio that i ever heard. so i did not hear anything else from him til the internet came along. i made friends with a guy in Italy who sent me the Irish Tour 74 Cd. that is a fine live album, though the electric piano sound is pretty ugly.

Somehow I heard of Rory through Tastes' first album and have been a fan ever since.
This is the song from which I took my forum name.
